Solidarity Fast in support of 'Jan Lokpal Bill' on Aug 16

Mangalore, August 12: “August 16, 2011 will mark the second freedom struggle in India” said veteran Gandhian and social activist Anna Hazre. Expressing strong discontent over the government's version of the anti-graft Lokpal Bill, Anna Hazare vowed to go on fast Aug 16, 2011 calling it the country's “second freedom struggle”.

“It looks like the government is not willing to eradicate corruption. This is our best chance to take affirmative steps to eradicate corruption in our country. We call upon the citizens of Mangalore to support Anna Hazare's “Second Freedom Struggle” to free the country from all sorts of corruption and corrupt practices,” said a release issued by D K Anti-corruption Forum.

“The government has cheated the entire nation by clearing the draft of the Lokpal Bill that excludes very important clauses of the Jan Lokpal Bill drafted by the Anna Hazare team. The Prime Minister, the Chief Justice and the members of parliament for their actions inside the house are excluded from the ambit of the Lokpal Bill that was placed in the Parliament recently,” the release said.

“We believe the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should be brought under the ambit of the Lokpal bill. All states should have Lokayukta (ombudsman) with prosecuting power. The government team had projected readiness to Team Anna Hazare and people's draft. But the government has tabled a Lokpal Bill that falls short of citizen's expectations in their interest and actions in curbing corruption,” it stated.

“Anna Hazare and his supporters feel that they are left with no option but to go on indefinite fast from August 16, 2011. In support and solidarity of 'Jan Lokpal Bill' and Anna's fight against corruption, we the citizens of Mangalore have decided to sit on fast in solidarity from 10 AM to 6 PM, August 16, 2011 at the entrance of the Deputy Commissioner's office, State Bank circle, Mangalore”, it said.

Karnataka Health Minister Sriramulu tests positive for covid-19

Bengaluru, Aug 9: karnataka's Health Minister B Sriramulu has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. He has been hospitalised and is being treated for Covid-19. The minister has also asked all of those who came in contact with him recently to take necessary precautions.

Sriramulu made the announcement in a series of tweets on Sunday. He said, “After symptoms of flu, I have tested positive for coronavirus today.”

“Under the leadership of Honorable Chief Minister (BS Yediyurappa), all the departments of the government, including my department, have been working hard against Covid-19. From the time of corona's appearance, I have had the opportunity to visit 30 districts and work in harmony with the government's desire to treat people well. It is in this backdrop that I am going to be hospitalized and treated,” B Sriramulu said.

Karnataka’s Health Minister also added, “All those who have been in contact with me recently have been requested to take precautionary measures.”

Earlier this month, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa also tested positive for Covid-19. The state's Leader of Opposition and former CM Siddaramaiah of the Congress also declared that his samples too had returned positive for the infection. Both of the leaders are undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at the privately-owned Manipal hospital in Bengaluru.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Karnataka has 79,773 active cases while a total of 89,238 patients have been discharged in the state after recovering from Covid-19 and 3091 have succumbed to it.

Two Kerala Customs officers involved in gold smuggling removed from service

Feb 25: Two Customs Preventive officers allegedly involved in gold smuggling cases in Kerala were removed from service, a top official said in Kochi on Monday.

Sumit Kumar, Commissioner of Customs (Preventive), Kochi, said that he took action against Radhakrishnan B, Superintendent of Customs, and Rahul, Inspector of Customs, who were allegedly involved in gold smuggling cases in the state.

Radhakrishnan was involved in attempted smuggling of gold weighing 24998.61 grams having a market value of over Rs 8 crore through Thiruvananthapuram international airport on May 13, 2019, Kumar said.

Rahul was involved in attempted smuggling of gold weighing 11,035.54 grams valued at over Rs 4 crore through international airport on August 19, 2019, the Customs Commissioner added.

Radhakrishnan is currently lodged in Central prison, Thiruvananthapuram after the Central Economic Intelligence Bureau under the Union Finance Ministry issued detention order under COFEPOSA (Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974).

Rahul, against whom detention order under COFEPOSA was issued, is absconding.

"Two Customs officers of the Customs Preventive Commissionerate, Kochi, who were involved in gold smuggling cases were removed from service by Sumit Kumar, Commissioner of Customs (Preventive), Cochin," an official release said.

Kumar said that both the cases were booked and investigated by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and while show cause notice under Customs Act 1962 has been issued against Radhakrishnan, investigation is under progress in the other case.

"Both the officers were removed from service, after due process of law under Rule 19 of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1965," the release said.

Katakana: RSS suspends its programme over COVID-19

Bengaluru, Mar 14: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Saturday suspended its proposed Akil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS) meeting scheduled to be held in the outskirts of the city, in the wake of the outbreak of Coronavirus in the state.

'In view of the seriousness of the pandemic COVID-19 and in the light of instructions and advisories thereof issues by the Union and the state governments, the Akil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha meeting scheduled in Bengaluru has been suspended', Sarakaryavah Suresh Joshi tweeted.

All Swayamsevaks should cooperate with the administrations to create awareness among the public and to face this successfully, he said.

It may be recalled that Karnataka State Government had ordered shut down of pubs, malls, theatres, and ban mass gatherings over the Coronavirus scare, on Friday.
