Police-XI beat DC's-XI to claim Independence Cricket Cup

Mangalore, August 15: The team of Mangalore City Police - Police XI - won the 15th edition of Independence Cup cricket tournament beating Deputy Commissioner's team – DC's XI - by 18 runs at Nehru Maidan here on Monday.

The tournament was organized by Sport Promoters Club, Mangalore.

Police XI captained by City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh defeated DC's XI led by Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda by 18-runs.

In the five-over match, Police XI scored 38 losing six wickets in four overs. DC's team managed to gather only 20 runs for five wickets in five overs.

Mangalore Journalists' team, Citizens' team, Vice Chancellor's team, Mayor's team and SP's team had also participated in the tournament.

The tournament was inaugurated by Krishna J Palemar, District in Charge Minister, after formal celebration of Independence Day in the morning.

On the occasion, Sports Promoters Club, Mangalore conferred the 'Sports Plus Award' on Chidananda Naik Jeppu, Vijaynath Vittal Shetty, and Rakesh Malli in recognition of their contribution to the filed of sports. Former Indian hockey team captain Dhanraj Pillay was the chief guest.

IGP Alok Mohan, City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police Labhu Ram, Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda, President of Shree Devi Educational Trust Sadananda Shetty, Mangalore City Corporation Mayor Praveen among others were present in the inaugural function.

Mangaluru, May 30: Coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today recorded third covid-19 death as a 67-year-old woman from Bantwal taluk succumbed to the coronavirus at the district Wenlock Hospital, the designated Covid hospital.

The victim is said to be a neighbor of two women (daughter-in-law and mother-in-law) who died of the coronavirus a few days ago. 

On April 18 due to difficulties in breathing, she was rushed to Wenlock Hospital, where she was tested positive for coronavirus. Initially she responded to treatment. However, her condition started worsening earlier this week and breathed her last today evening.

Her daughter also has been tested positive for the deadly virus and she is currently undergoing treatment.

Mangaluru, Mar 23: The magisterial enquiry into the police firing during the anti-CAA protest on December 19 in Mangaluru, has been postponed following the lockdown of Dakshina Kannada district, Udupi DC G Jagadeesh announced on Monday.

The inquiry by Udupi DC G Jagadeesh was scheduled on Monday. Already, City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha and others have deposed before the magistrate. The Deputy Commissioner and the Assistant Commissioner were supposed to appear before the magistrate.

Following the December 19 violence and the death of  Nausheen and Jaleel due to alleged police firing, the state government had commissioned two probes-- one magisterial and the other, a CID inquiry.

 As per the government order, a report on the inquiry was to be submitted before March 23. On the request by the magistrate for more time since the documents and videos had to be examined, the government had asked him to submit the report by April 23.

Mangaluru, Jul 2: As many as 90 persons have tested positive for covid-19 in last 24 hours in Dakshina Kannada district. 

With this, the total number of coronavirus positive cases in the district mounted to 915. 

Out of the 90 positive cases, fifteen persons had returned from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Dubai. A BJP MLA, DHO and a pathologist are also among those who infected.
