Govt planning to distribute laptops for high school teachers: Kageri

August 27, 2011

Mangalore, August 27: The State Government is planning to distribute laptops for high school teachers to ensure effective education in schools said Vishweshwara Hegde Kaageri, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education.

He was speaking at the educational conference of high school headmasters and felicitation ceremony for the top scorers in SSLC exams.

Advising the teachers about the responsibilities they have in effective nation building, Mr Kageri said that they should encourage students to be more creative and strive for the overall development of the child.

“Talents of our nation should contribute to the development of all facets in society, rather than increasingly accumulating in the field of engineering and medicine”, he said.

He also expressed concern over the drastic fall in SSLC results of the district. Noting that only 53 of the 423 high schools in the district have achieved 100%, he insisted that teachers should strive to increase the results in all schools.

D H Shankara Murthy, Chairperson, Legislative Council, in his inaugural address lamented that though there has been considerable debate about education, no solid steps to increase the quality of education has been initiated.

“We have shown considerable economic growth. We need to convert this growth into social development by increasing the standards of education”, he said. Sticking to the principles of Vedas and Bahgavadgita was a sure way to achieve it, he opined.

Mr Murthy found it necessary to have a debate on what we should and shouldn't teach children.

Swami Jitakaamanandji Maharaj, President, Ramakrishna Mutt, Sri Nirbhayananda Saraswathi Swamiji, Sri Ramakrishna Vivekananda Ashrama, N Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker, Legislative Assembly, U T Khader, MLA, Mangalore, Capt. Ganesh Karnik, MLC and Shailaja Bhat, President, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat were present.

Prizes were distributed to the highest scoring students of SSLC exams from all taluks. Awards were also given to 53 high schools, which scored 100% in SSLC exams.
