POVERTY: Man absconding after failed attempt to sell four-day old infant

August 28, 2011

Mangalore, 28: A daily wage worker is absconding after his failed attempt to sell his four-day old infant without the knowledge of his wife.

The accused is Hassan based Ravi alias Kalandar (21), who has converted into Hinduism before marrying Lakshmi (19) a few years ago. The couple was living in a tent at Annachi Maidan near Morgan Gate, Jeppu here.

Laxmi had given birth to a baby boy four days ago. On Friday noon, when Lakshmi moved out of the tent for some reason and came back after few minutes later, the little baby was missing.

It was apparent that someone had lifted the infant for a bad purpose and a worried mother started to shout. When Ravi came to know that people in the surrounding area have gathered and they were suspicious of him, he suddenly appeared with the baby. However, he disappeared after handing over the baby to Lakshmi.

On hearing the news women police visited the spot on Saturday evening and registered a case of attempt to sell child against Ravi and are on the lookout for him.

The couple already had a two and a half year old baby boy. Police are of the suspicion that Ravi might have planned to sell the new born baby because of poverty.

A seven year old sister of Lakshmi too lives with this poor family as her parents are no more. She was looking after the child whenever the couple went for work.

As Ravi has been absconding, a helpless Lakshmi, her little sister and two children have been handed over to the children welfare committee.
