Grand finale for Ganesha Utsav in Mangalore

Mangalore, September 8: Grand procession marked the end of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav in the city on Wednesday night.

The Ganesh idol was taken out in a procession from Nehru Maidan and immersed in the pond near Mahamaya Temple in the early hours of Thursday.

A large number of people witnessed the Shobha Yatra. “This is a grand procession next only to the Dashara procession of Gokarnanatha Temple at Kudroli,” said Ramesh of Pandeshwar who participated in the celebrations with his family members.

Entry of vehicles to State Bank circle was banned to enable people to participate in the procession.

The procession began around 8pm. There were several tableaux depicting mythological episodes, Koolu, and a dance sequence from Aptha Mithra.

The procession passed through Hampankatta circle and K.S. Rao Road. Poojas were offered for the Ganesh idol at various places during the procession, which culminated at Mahamaya Temple on Car Street.

With rains staying away, the pocessionists had a smooth walk. Incessant rains over the last couple of days had threatened to cast a shadow on the Shobha Yatra

The Ganesh idol at Nehru Maidan was installed by Hindu Yuvasene. The city police made elaborate security arrangements to ensure peace during the procession.

Thrissur, Feb 11: The latest test result of the woman medical student, who arrived here from China's Wuhan region and was the first positive case from India for the novel Coronavirus (nCoV), has come out negative, health officials said on Monday.

Her condition was "stable", they said.

According to the state health department as of now, 31 people are in isolation wards across various hospitals in the state.

"The blood test result of the first patient from Thrissur, from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) testing centre at Alappuzha, shows a negative result.

But we need confirmation from the NIV at Pune," a senior medical officer told news agency.

After the first positive case was reported from Thrissur, two other Keralite students from Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus, had tested positive in Alappuzha and Kasaragod districts.

The health department had earlier said those in isolation wards of various hospitals in the state have come down to 34.

"A total of 3,367 are under observation across the state, of which 3,336 are under home quarantine," a release issued by the health department said.

The department has already sent at least 364 samples for testing at the NIV at Pune and so far 337 results have returned negative.

The ''state calamity'' alert, which was declared on February 3, was withdrawn on Friday after no new positive cases of infection were detected.

Amidst heightened border tensions between Indian and China, senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's two year old tweet comparing his party with Communist Party of China started going viral. 

The tweet, dated 26 June, 2016 reads: "Communist Party of China & BJP have done numerous works in social field. This way, there is tremendous similarities between the two parties." (sic)

Twitterati dug up this tweet after over 20 Indian Army personnel, including a colonel, were killed in a clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh earlier this week.

Soon after Chouhan's tweet went viral, netizens took to the micro-blogging site and slammed BJP. One user said, "Interesting comment by Hindutva ITSELF to recognise how similar they are with China. No doubt. Both believe in Dragon Throne .... and brutal absolute control." Another user said, "No wonder the BJP & China both agree that PLA never crossed into Indian territory."

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Congress MLA UT Khader on Wednesday slammed the Central government over the enactment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and said it violates the Constitution.

"The new citizenship amendment bill is unconstitutional. The citizenship cannot be given on cast and creed basis. Because of these things we are fighting against it," he said while speaking to media in Bengaluru.

Opposition along with several non-BJP state governments, including Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Kerala, Punjab and Rajasthan have refused to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed NRC in their respective states.

The CAA grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
