Koraga's stage day-long protest demanding healthy food

Mangalore, September 9: Members of the Koraga community staged a day-long protest against irregularities in the delivery of services to them and delay in the appointment tribal officers here on Thursday.

The protest was organised jointly by the Koraga Abhivridhi Okoota (Karnataka-Kerala), Koraga Zilla Samiti and Samgra Grameena Ashrama. A large number of people gathered in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner participated in it.

Mangalore MLA and the Deputy Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, N. Yogish Bhat, visited the venue and assured Koraga community of speedy action on the demands put forth by them.

Baalraj Kodikal, member of the Okkooa, said that they had not received "nutritious food" which was to be supplied by the Integrated Tribal Development Project to the Koraga community through anganwadis this monsoon. Under the scheme, the food is to be supplied to Koraga families only during the monsoon, he said, and even that had not been provided this year.

He said that for the last six months, the post of ITDP officer was lying vacant after the previous officer had been removed for irregularities worth lakhs of rupees. Posts of tribal inspectors were also lying vacant for the last five years, causing huge difficulties for the Koraga community. Mr. Baalraj said that due to this, people could not get enough information about government schemes, and there was no one process applications and so on.

Another major demand of the community was land. While the Koraga community had been allotted 600 acres in the neighbouring Udupi district, only 70 families in Dakshina Kannada had been given about one acre of land with title deeds, Mr. Baalraj said.

Deputy Commisioner N.S. Channappa Gowda accepted a memorandum from the protestors and said that he would rectify the problem of supplying nutritious food.

Kozhikode, May 21: Six employees of a private clinic here and a taxi driver have been put on mandatory 14 days quarantine as a lady gynaecologist running the dispensary tested positive for COVID-19 in Bengaluru.

District Medical Officer Dr V Jayashree said the gynaecologist had returned to Karnataka a fortnight ago and tested positive while she was on quarantine there. Six staff members of the clinic at nearby Thamarassery and the taxi driver who dropped her inBengaluruon May 5 have been asked to go on quarantine, she said.

Patients had visited the clinic, belonging to the gynaecologist and her doctor husband, till April-end. Sources said the district administration is trying to figure out thecontacts of the gynaecologist, including pregnant women, for being quarantined.

Bengaluru, May 7: Karnataka Minister for Labour Shivaram Hebbar, on Thursday, ordered issuance of notice to employers who have not paid salary to the workers during lockdown period amid Coronavirus threat in the state.

The Ministry has also directed serving notice to those employers who have reduced the wages of the workers in April '20, official sources told UNI here.

State Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had appealed to the employers not to retrench any employee from the job because of their failure to attend to work because of Coronavirus which is spreading like wildfire and since they have been asked to remain in the house.

Mangaluru, June 27: The district health authorities are likely to conduct mass random testing for Covid-19 in Ullal town on the outskirts of the city in the wake of detection of several new coronavirus positive cases there in past couple few days.  

An elderly woman from Azad Nagar in Ullal was died of coronavirus earlier this week. Many others including a couple of policemen also tested positive for the deadly virus in vicinity.

Following this, local elected representatives including MLA U T Khader and religious leaders of Ullal held a meeting regarding taking steps to control the spread of the virus. In the meeting Mr Khader suggested the authorities to conduct random testing in Ullal town. 

Apart from Azad Nagar, covid-19 cases have surfaced in Kodi, Bangera Lane and in the surroundings of police station and Sahara Hospital triggering panic among people. Hence, the authorities are like to conduct random testing of auto rickshaw drivers, fishermen, street vendors among others. 

Meanwhile, several mosques in Ullal have reportedly decided to suspend congregational prayers temporarily.
