Fight breaks out between Dalit groups at grievances redressal meeting

Udupi, September 14: Division among the Dalit groups in Udupi districts came to fore when two rival groups took two opposite stands on the presence of media persons at the district level Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes grievances redressal meeting, convened by the Deputy Commissioner here on Wednesday.

This is the first time in last four years a DC in Udupi convened the SC/ST redressal meeting.

At the beginning of the meet, DC M T Reju, instructed the media persons to keep away from the grievances meet, as it is a purely official meet and not a public meet.

At this juncture, Jayan Malpe, District Convener of Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samithi, supported by DSS (Ambedkar-Vaad), DSS (Prof. Krishnappa founded), and Samatha Sainik Dal opposed the DC's decision to keep out the media from the meet.

As Uday Kumar Tallur of DSS (Bheem-Vaad) opposed Jayan's stand and opposed the presence of the media, the meet plunged into turmoil.

DC said that the meeting was convened in the wake of the allegations that SC/ST grievance meet was not called for long. It was organised to solve some of the issues concerning Dalits, which remained unnoticed and unsolved.

He said that five Dalit representatives had only been invited from each of the Dalit organisations to the meet.

Out of the six Dalit groups present at the grievance meet all had their own argument between themselves over various issues. Argument by Uday Tallur that government employees belonging to Dalit communities cannot attend the grievances meet, added fuel to the rage as Jayan was an employee of a nationalized bank.

Dalit leader Narayana Manur demanded justification from the DC.

As the war of words continued SP and other police officials intervened. Mr Reju adjourned the meet due to the presence of the media and warring Dalit groups.

Bengaluru, Mar 15: The Karnataka government has intensified screening all international passengers at airports by classifying them into three risk categories.

Passengers, who are symptomatic on arrival fall under risk category 1, those aged above 60 and have Symptoms fall under category 2. Those who fall in both these categories are being quarantined at designated facilities for 14 days from arrival.

Asymptomatic passengers arriving from any of the COVID-19 affected countries will fall under category 3 and will be advised to be under strict home quarantine for 14 days, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said here on Sunday.

Udupi, Aug 1: A girl child died five persons suffered injuries in a car accident today on National Highway-66 near Ambalpady in Udupi.

According to sources, two couples and children were travelling in the car from Mangaluru to Shikaripura when the tragedy took place. 

The speeding car rammed into the road divider and flipped over after the driver lost control over it near Ambalpady. 

Among the injured, the condition of a woman is said to be critical. She has been admitted to KMC Hospital in Manipal. The other passengers escaped with minor injuries.

A case has been registered at Udupi town traffic police station and investigations are on. More details are awaited.

Bengaluru, Jun 6: Karnataka registered 378 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, breaching the 5,000-mark to settle at 5,213, said an official, here on Saturday. "New cases reported from Friday 5 p.m. to Saturday 6 p.m. is 378," said a health official.

Of the new cases, 333 are local returnees, comprising 88 per cent of the new infections. Returnees from Maharashtra accounted for 99 per cent new cases at 329.

Majority infections in Karnataka nowadays are returnees, mostly from the state''s northern neighbour. Only 27 new infections were contacts of earlier cases.

On Saturday, cases spiked in Udupi, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Bengaluru Urban, Belagavi, Vijayapura, Davangere and Dakshina Kannada.

Udupi witnessed the highest number of cases (121), followed by Yadgir (103), Kalaburagi (69), Dakshina Kannada (24), Bengaluru Urban (18), Vijayapura and Davangere (6 each), Belagavi (5), Gadag (4), Mandya, Hassan, Dharwad and Haveri (3 each), Raichur, Chikkaballapura and Uttara Kannada (2 each) and Bidar, Tumkur, Kolar and Koppal (1 each).

Among the new cases, three patients from Bengaluru Urban are suffering from Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and another from Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI).

There were seven cases with international travel history to United Arab Emirates (UAE) and one to Turkey.

Meanwhile, 280 people were discharged in the past 24 hours and two persons succumbed to the virus, one from Bidar and another from Vijayapura. Of all the cases, 3,184 are active, 1,968 discharged, 59 dead and 11 in the ICU.

In the past 24 hours, Karnataka tested 11,862 people, of which 11,431 reports returned negative. In total, 3.72 lakh samples have been tested so far, of which 3.61 lakh have returned negative.

Currently, Udupi is leading the state''s Covid-19 burden with 785 active cases, followed by Kalaburagi (448), Yadgir (407), Raichur (320) and Mandya (163) among others.

Bengaluru Urban has accounted for 13 deaths, followed by Kalaburagi (7), Bidar, Vijayapura, Davangere and Dakshina Kannada (6 each) and Chikkaballapura (3 each), among others.
