Mangalore, Spetember 18: Senior theatre artiste and MP Dr B Jayashri stressed on the need to promote heroic persona Veerarani Abbakka in the national-level in the form of drama, lavani and sound and light shows.

She said that attempts to publicise historical personality Abbakka should not be limited to Tulunadu, but the achievement of courageous lady who was the first Indian woman to fight against Portuguese, deserves to be highlighted in the national-level. B Jayashri was speaking after releasing 'Abbakka Sankathana'- volume of write ups on Rani Abbakka at SDM Law College on Saturday. The programme was jointly organised by the Kannada and Culture Department and Veerarani Abbakka Utsava Samiti.

Releasing the book, she said that the life and achievement of Rani Abbakka should spread across the nation and reach the hearts of the people. “Though organising Utsava can help to publicise Abbakka's work to some extent, it would be through sound and light shows that Abbakka's life can reach a common man.” She said that people would curiously come and listen to the story which is narrated through sound and light shows just like the one in Red Fort and added that Lavani's and theatre too can narrate Abbakka's story effectively.

The veteran artiste also sang a song from 'Karimaye' drama, in a high pitch voice enthralling the audience and said that the song on Abbakka's life should be framed on the similar lines, very strong and effective.

Earlier, inaugurating the programme, District-in-Charge Minister Krishna J Palemar said that there is a necessity to build Abbakka Bhavana and assured of doing his best to provide funds for the same. Appreciating 'Abbakka Sankathana,' the Minister said that the book would help to understand the contribution of Rani Abbakka. “Sankathana should reach every home in the district and an additional grant would be given if the initiative is taken to do the same,” he said.

Chief guest of the function MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that he has written a letter to the government requesting to name Mangalore Bunder as Rani Abbakka Port.
Chief Editor of the book, Dr Amrutha Someshawara, informed that the book on life of Abbakka will be published in three different volumes. The last volume will consist of all the information and statements which the first two volumes would miss out, he said. The book consists of 400 pages and is priced at Rs 300.
