Govt yet to study Somasekhara Commission report

Mangalore, September 22: Christian youths facing criminal cases in the aftermath of attacks on churches in September 2008 will have to wait for some time before cases against them are dropped. The state government that set up the Justice B K Somasekhara Commission of Inquiry to go into the issues that led to the attacks and incidents thereafter is yet to take a view on the report, said S M Jaamdar, principal home secretary.

The law department is examining the inquiry commission report, Jaamdar told reporters here on Wednesday. We have received various representations (from Christian organizations) urging the state government to withdraw cases filed against Christians, he said adding the home department could take forward the process once the government takes a view on the report. The question of processing files to drop the cases will be taken up thereafter, he said.

Karnataka which presently has a cyber crime police station in Bangalore will get three more __ in Mangalore, Hubli and Mysore. The state government around a fortnight ago received guidelines from the Union government to set up these cyber police stations given the increase in white collar crimes, he said, adding that the state government would forward the proposal received from DGP-CID to the Union government within a week.

After a rap on the knuckles from the State Government on failure to serve non-bailable arrest warrants on the Reddy brothers, Jaamdar said the state government has issued guidelines 15-days ago deputing one lower level police personnel at every court who would monitor the process and coordinate with jurisdictional police stations. It is time that a separate process serving wing was set up either under the judiciary or home department for this, he said.

The Forensic Science Laboratory, Bangalore, is being modernised at a cost of Rs 3 crore this year. This entails purchase of automatic fingerprint identification system, computer programme for graphology and state of the art equipment to deal with serology tests. The DNA Centre in Bangalore is now self-sufficient and its dependence of Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) has come down, Jaamdar noted.

Belagavi, Feb 22: A madrasa in Karnataka’s Belagavi district hosted a Hindu-Muslim mass marriage on its premises on Friday, sending a strong message of communal amity. As many as 76 Muslim couples and 25 Hindu couples entered marital life on the occasion.

Madarsa Al Arabia Anwarul Ulooma, an Islamic religious institute in Bailhongal, 50km from Belagavi district headquarters, played host to the event that was organised by Jamia Faizan-ul-Quran and Issa Foundation, which has conducted mass marriages on a bigger scale in Gujarat.

The mass marriage comes a month after the 100-year-old Cheravally Jamaat Masjid in Kerala’s Kayamkulam in Alappuzha hosted a Hindu wedding, complete with a vegetarian feast for 4,000 people. A Hindu priest led the rituals, and the couple sought the blessings of chief imam Riyasudeen Faizy of the mosque.

At Bailhongal, moulvis and pontiffs led the marriage proceedings and asked the couples to read passages from Quran and Bhagvad Gita.

The Hindu couples were gifted a copy of the Gita, and newly-married Muslim couples received a copy of Quran. The organisers provided each Hindu bride a mangalsutra. Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalagi blessed the couples at the event, which was attended by more than 4,000 people.

Mohammad Rafique A Naik, a member of Jamia Faizan-ul-Quran, said they have gifted each couple a refrigerator, an almirah and a tailoring machine. Ranjita Kalala, a bride who married a daily-wage labourer, said her family couldn’t afford the cost of a wedding, adding, “When we learnt about the Bailhongal madrassa’s plan, we agreed to sign up because it also sends out a message of communal harmony.”

Mangaluru, May 2:  Dakshina Kannada district administration has taken steps to quarantine people returning after having lost their jobs in foreign countries.

Marriages hall, general halls and hostels are being identified for the purpose, a source said.

Official said that Coronavirus scare also has forced many people from foreign countries, those in including Gulf countries, to return to their native villages.

The Gulf countries are also sending back those staying illegally there. 

Once the flight services resume, thousands of people are likely to return to the country.

Meanwhile, DK deputy commissioner Karnataka held a video conference with Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

Mangaluru, Mar 29: Dakshina Kannada Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited in a statement announced that their milk collection centres across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will be closed on March 29 and 30.

Due to a shortage of storage space with them, the Union has decided to stop collecting milk on these two days, according to the statement issued here on Saturday.

The sale/retail of milk and milk products won’t be affected in these two days.
