Srinath, Reeth Abraham run with Mangaloreans for healthy heart

Mangalore, September 25: Hundreds of people in the city on Sunday ran for a cause, as medical colleges and hospitals conducted various awareness programmes as part of the World Heart Day.

Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore and Nitte KS Hegde Medical College (Kshema), Deralakatte organised awareness runs from Bejai to Attavar and from Pumpwell to IMA hall respectively early in the morning.

International athlete Reeth Abraham was the torchbearer of the KMC World Heart Day Run-2011, while cricketer Javagal Srinath was the celebrity guest.

The runners passed through Lalbagh, PVS Circle, Bunts Hostel Circle, to reach KMC Hospital, Ambedkar Circle.

Attractive prizes were distributed for participants for the best corporate participation, best institution participation, best placard, best slogan shouting, and youngest and eldest participant who run or walk through the stretch.

Winners of the drawing competition that was conducted on September 10 at KMC Hospital, Attavar, were also given away prizes at the valedictory programme.

On the occasion, Mr. Srinath, current match referee of the International Cricket Council and Secretary, Karnataka State Cricket Association, and Ms. Abraham were also given a warm felicitation.

District In-charge Minister Krishna J Palemar, Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly N Yogish Bhat, City Police chief Seemanth Kumar Singh and Manipal University Registrar Dr G K Prabhu were the guests of honour.

New Delhi, Jan 24: A nurse from Kerala employed at a hospital in Saudi Arabia has tested positive for the deadly novel coronavirus, Union minister of state for external affairs V Muraleedharan said on Thursday.

The minister confirmed that about 100 Indian nurses working in the Saudi Arabia hospital were tested following the threat of coronavirus and one of them was found infected by the deadly virus.

Taking to Twitter, MoS (MEA) Muraleedharan said, "About 100 Indian nurses mostly from Kerala working at Al-Hayat hospital have been tested and none except one nurse was found infected by Coronavirus. Affected nurse is being treated at Aseer National Hospital and is recovering well."

Earlier in the day, he had said that he was in touch with the Indian consulate in Jeddah to provide all possible support to the nurses quarantined at Al-Hayat hospital.

"Spoke to @CGIJeddah on Indian nurses quarantined at Al-Hayat Hospital, Khamis Mushait, Saudi Arabia due to Corona virus threat. They are in touch with hospital management and Saudi foreign Ministry. Have asked our Consulate to provide all possible support", he had tweeted.

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday wrote to the external affairs ministry seeking intervention in Corona outbreak among Kerala nurses in Saudi Arabia

"Corona outbreak among nurses in Azir Aba Al Hayat hospital in Saudi Arabia should be considered serious and necessary steps must be taken", he had said through the letter.

The chief minister had also requested MEA to communicate with Saudi Arabia to ensure proper treatment and protection for the patients.

Bengaluru, June 23: A head constable from Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) committed suicide on board a bus after testing positive for COVID-19 in the city.

As per sources, the 50-year-old head constable had tested positive for coronavirus last evening and today he was being taken to a hospital in KSRP bus.

It is learned that he hanged himself to death inside the bus as there was no one else.

Bengaluru, Jun 14: Karnataka Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar on Sunday said there was no question of reimposition of the lockdown amid speculation that it would be done.

"The question of lockdown is not in front of us. There is such speculation as the Prime Minister is holding a video conference with all Chief Ministers on June 16 and 17.

On June 17 our state will be taking part in it at around 3 pm," Mr Sudhakar said in response to a question.

Speaking to reporters at Kalaburagi, he said the current situation would be discussed in that meeting. Mr Sudhakar said the Prime Minister has repeatedly been holding such video conferencing exercises to take stock of the situation and plan for the future.

"There will not be a lockdown anymore according to me," he added.

There has been speculation that there would be another shutdown from this month owing to a rapid rise in the number of cases.

Mr Sudhakar had on Friday said experts have indicated a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state in August and that the government was taking all precautionary measures in that direction.

As of June 13 evening, cumulatively 6,824 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 81 deaths and 3,648 discharges.
