Students urged to update themselves about the developments

Mangalore, September 25: Doctoral programmes have a profound effect on the undergraduate and M Tech level education as teachers will be armed with knowledge of much higher level and greater analytical capabilities, said Prof M M Sharma, Emeritus Professor of Eminence ICT (Deemed University), Mumbai.

Delivering the eighth annual convocation address at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) at Surathkal near here on Sunday, he said innovative teaching is triggered thorough doctoral programme and in Applied Sciences the research at Doctoral level has many additional imperatives.

He said the utility of research invigorates the rigors of academic research rather than causing distraction. “We need to link the research to the needs of the industry,” he said.

He said, “We have immense opportunities and have extraordinary entrepreneurial skills in our genes”

Urging the graduating students to update themselves about the developments, Mr Sharma also said that it was necessity to keep abreast with current literature too.

Speaking on the occasion, Sushil Chandra Tripathi, Chairman of the Board of Governors of NITK said that a paradigm change in the way engineering problems were analysed and solved is required so as to address impacts of growth in human population and globalisation.

There is a need to redefine, restructure and reorganise the technical and engineering systems and organisations so as to ensure sustainable development, he said.

Prof Sandeep Sancheti, Director of NITK, said that the institute has 36 ongoing externally sponsored R&D projects along with internally funded projects. The institutes has generated a revenue of Rs 13 crores and Corpus funds stands to a total of more than Rs 40 crores, he said and added that the revenue earned through consultancy and testing has reached Rs 1.7 crore.

NITK has active MoUs with industrial giants such as IBM, BOSCH, Robert BOSCH, Accenture, MRPL etc. Three students were offered more than Rs 65 lakh and more than 10 students had received salary offers of over Rs 20 lakh per annum from Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, National, Tata Consultancy and Bajaj Auto.

As many as 490 students of various engineering streams including Doctoral thesis, MBA, MCA, M Tech, B Tech were given the certificates.

Udupi, Jul 22: Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh on Wednesday announced lifting of ban on movement of people and vehicles with immediate effect in the borders of Kerala which was banned during lockdown.

The announcement comes hours after Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa announced that lockdown in Bengaluru and other parts of the state will not be extended any further, suggesting people should wear masks and maintain physical distancing strictly.

Mr Jagadeesh noted that although the seal down of the borders of the district would be lifted, checkposts on the border would be set up and urged people to enter the district only in case of emergency.

Mangaluru, May 12: The first repatriation flight to Mangaluru from Dubai with nearly 180 passengers landed at the international airport here. 

The total passengers, including 88 men, 84 women, five children and two infants arrived by the Air India Express flight IX 384 late Tuesday night, airport sources said.

There were 12 medical emergency cases and 38 pregnant women among them, they said. The district administration had made arrangements for receiving the passengers, who were provided with sanitizers and masks. They were advised to maintain social distancing as per the health protocol.

All the foreign returnees were screened as per the standard operating procedure to ensure that they were asymptomatic.

The passengers were taken to their chosen place of accommodation in KSRTC buses. They will be undergoing a 14-day quarantine in the places, which will be monitored by doctors assigned by the health department. More than 17 hotels and 12 hostels have been arranged for the accommodation of the returnees.

Passengers were also asked to download the mandatory 'Aroygya Sethu' app for contact tracing. Rahul Shinde IAS who is in charge of arranging quarantine facilities, airport director V V Rao and district health officer Ramachandra Bairy were present at the airport.

Udupi, Jan 9: State Revenue Minister R Ashoka said on Wednesday that the state government is embarking on a novel method to ensure that social security schemes were available to the beneficiaries at their doorsteps.

Speaking after inaugurating the Mini Vidhana Soudha here, he said government will look into the Aadhaar number and income certificates to decide the eligibility of the beneficiaries. The initiative will help the poor to access welfare schemes without any hassles.

The initiative will be launched as a pilot project in Udupi district. Later, the project will extend to other districts in a phased manner. In Udupi district, 30,000 beneficiaries have been identified. The government has set aside nearly Rs 7,000 crore for social security schemes. The initiative will not only eliminate middlemen menace but will help the government save Rs 1,000 crore.
