DYFI Protest march culminates in violence

Kumbla, September 27: A protest march, taken out by DYFI to the Kumbla grama panchayat office on Monday, demanding probe into the alleged irregularities in the Centre's job guarantee programme, ended up in violence and stone pelting at the police.

Police said they resorted to lathi charge as DYFI men started pelting stones at them. The injured DYFI man Koggu, 22, Kumbla village secretary of the DYFI and Nizam, 21, member of the Bambrana village committee were admitted to Kumbla cooperative hospital.

Two civil police officers and two DYFI activists sustained injuries in stone throwing and police lathi charge.

Senior civil police officers Sandeep, 31, and Suresh Cyriac were also admitted to hospital as they sustained injuries in stone throwing.

The march which started from the town was blocked by the police near the panchayat office resulting in scuffle, pushing and jostling by the police and the DYFI men.

Udupi, Apr 21:  Four walk-in sample collection units for COVID-19 test has been installed in the district, sources said on Monday.

The units have been installed at Udupi’s T M A Pai Hospital and district hospital and at Kundapura and Karkala taluk hospitals by Indian Medical Association, Udupi Branch along with Rotary Club and Red Cross Society.

Udupi district was declared COVID-19-free after all three COVID-19 positive patients were discharged after recovery and were now in home quarantine, the sources added.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker Vishvesha Hegde Kageri on Friday announced continuation of ban on private TV channels from live coverage of the Budget Session being held this Month and next month.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Kageri said that the ban was imposed on the lines of practice in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the Parliament. Private channels will not be allowed to cover live on going session instead they will be provided with clippings by the concerned Department as was done during the previous Session.

For the first time in the history the BJP government, which had come to power for the second time in the state last year after pulling down Congress-JDS coalition government, had banned live coverage of the session by private channels and despite Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa's appeal the ban was not lifted.

Mangaluru, May 9: Dakshina Kannada District Collector Sindhu B Roopesh on Friday held a meeting to discuss the precautionary measures to be taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and the current situation in the district.

The meeting was attended by Member of Parliament and Karnakata BJP unit chief Nalin Kumar Kateel, Minister-in-charge of Dakshina Kannada Kota Srinivasa Poojary, MLA Vedavas Kamath and District Medical Officer Dr Ramachandra Bauri among others were present there.

Top officials of the police department, labour department officials and other concerned persons were also present in the meeting.
