24 year old woman drowns in Arabian Sea

Karwar, September 26: In a heartrending tragedy a young woman drowned to death in the Arabian Sea off the Apsarakonda coast in Honnavar Taluk.

The victim has been identified as Parveen Banu (24), an IT professional and daughter of Ibrahim from Bangalore.

It is said that she along with her family members had come to Bhatkal, to attend a wedding ceremony.

On Tuesday evening, Parveen and seven other members of the same family from Maqdoom colony Bhatkal had visited Apsarakonda beach located around 30 kilo-meters away.

The tragedy occurred when three women among them tried to take the photographs by stepping into the turbulent sea.

A strong wave washed away the trio within a second in front of a crowd that was frolicking in the waves.

Although, two among them - Ishrath Banu (25) and Sakina (27) - were rescued by the local people, Parveen was vanished.

After a few minutes, her body was recovered by local fishermen and shifted to Honnavar Government Hospital in the presence of police before handing over to family members.

A case has been registered at Honnavar police station.

Bengaluru, May 20: 63 more COVID-19 cases have been reported from Karnataka, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 1,458 on Wednesday, said the state Health Department.

The total number of cases includes, 864 active cases and 41 deaths (one due to non-COVID cause), it added.

Total 10 people have been discharged today while 553 persons have been discharged so far.

New Delhi, Jun 9: Elections to seven seats of the Karnataka Legislative Council will be held on June 29, the poll panel announced on Tuesday.

The seven seats are falling vacant on June 30, according to an Election Commission statement.

Members of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly will vote on June 29 to elect the seven new MLCs.

The Commission has directed the Karnataka chief secretary to depute a senior officer to ensure that the  instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with during the elections.

The counting of votes will be held on the evening of June 29 after completion of polls, as per practice.

The notification for the elections will be issued on June 11, the statement said.

MLCs are usually elected by four types of electors -- MLAs, Graduates, Teachers and members of local authorities.

On Monday, the Commission had deferred elections to four seats of the Karnataka Legislative Council -- two each from Teachers and Graduate constituencies -- falling vacant on June 30 due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

"If MLAs are electors, the size of the electorate is small and the assembly building is the only polling station. When the electorate is teachers or graduates, the number of those who can vote is higher.

Due to the virus, Commission only allowed polls to seats where MLAs are the electors to prevent large gatherings," explained a senior EC functionary.

Mangaluru Jul 11: A member of Adyar gram panchayat, who was attacked by a gang last night breathed his last at a private hospital in the city.

Mohammed Yaqoob, who was a BJP backed member of Adyar GP was attacked near his village by a gang at around 9 pm on Friday.

In spite of sustaining serious injuries, he managed to return home. 

He then hired an auto-rickshaw and went to Highland Hospital along with his son. 

However, he breathed his last there without responding to any treatment.

According to sources, the victim knew one of the assistants.

It is suspected that political or personal rivalry might be the reason for the attack. However the exact motto behind the attack is not yet known. 

A case has been registered in Kankanady Rural police station.
