The other face of poverty: 19-year-old student-cum-labourer crushed under debris

Puttur, October 1: In a tragic incident, a college student was crushed to death when a wall collapsed on him in Puttur late on Thursday.

The victim has been identified as Prakash Kumar (19), son of Kukkadi Balakrishna Gowda, a resident of Aryapu village. He was involved in the renovation work being carried out at the Mahalasa Medical and the shopping complex. He was digging the foundation pit for the new wall when the adjacent dilapidated structure caved in.

He was rushed to the hospital, but subsequently sustained to his injuries. Prashant was a second year student at the Government Polytechnic and was believed to be a very talented student. He had to take up cooli work during night due to support his family which is in extreme poverty.

Prashant was involved in the construction work along with his relatives for the past several days, it has been learnt. Puttur police have registered a case.

Bengaluru, Jul 29: State officials will conduct Common Entrance Test (CET) exam as per the instructions given by the state high court, said Karnataka deputy chief minister CN Ashwathnarayan on Tuesday.

"Officials have informed that they are all set to conduct exams on July 30 and 31. We will put this matter in front of the high court. As per the instructions of the high court, we will move forward," said Ashwathnarayan.

This comes after Karnataka High court asked the state government to reconsider the decision of conducting the CET exam.

"...I had called an emergency meeting with district collectors, officials of education, transport, health, police department. And, I took information about the preparedness for conducting the CET exam," he added.

Karnataka CET Exam is a state-level entrance exam organised for providing admissions in Engineering, Pharmacy, B Pharma and other courses offered by colleges and institutions located in the state.

Wayanad, April 7: The Kerala government has allowed people from border villages of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to use medical facilities at Wayanad.

"We have opened our borders to people from neighbouring states who require medical facilities in Kerala. Twenty-nine people from Bairakuppa in Karnataka have used medical facilities in Wayanad and 44 from Tamil Nadu," Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Monday.

Bairakuppa, a small village in Karnataka, is separated by the river Kabini from Wayanad district and the residents there depend on the healthcare facilities available in Wayanad.

Speaking to news agency, Adeela Abdulla, District Collector of Wayanad, said that instructions have been issued to allow people from neighbouring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, who need medical facilities, to cross the border.

"Right from the start of the lockdown, we have not restricted individuals from Bairakuppa region in Mysore district to use the medical facilities in Wayanad as people in that region depend on medical facilities in Wayanad," she said.

Mangaluru, May 10: A young photographer has drowned in River Phalguni near Maravoor on the outskirts of the city.

The victim has been identified as Kaushik, 22, who was working for Diya Studio in Kavoor. A resident of Kavoor, he was the only son of his mother.

The tragedy occurred when he had been to the river along with four friends to collect freshwater snails.

It is learnt that local residents rushed to the spot when Kaushik’s friends raised alarm. However, they could not rescue him.

Kaushik’s body was retrieved from the water after sometime. A case has been registered at Kavoor police station.
