Bantwal-based Moosa Kunhi appointed as KAT judge

Bangalore, October 2: Moosa Kunhi Nayarmoole has been appointed as the lone judicial member of the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT) by the honourable President of India Pratibha Patil.

Mr. Moosa Kunhi, originally from Manila village of Bantwal taluk, was serving as the additional registrar of the Lokayukta since 2009. He has also served in various capacities in the judiciary for the past several decades.

61-year-old Moosa Kunhi is the son of Haji Moidin Kutti and Fathima Hajuma. He completed his primary education from Pakalakunja higher primary school and highschool education from Paivalike government highschool. Subsequently he joined Vivekananda college, Puttur, where he completed his BSc.

Then he joined law college in Udupi and stood sixth in the examination conducted by the Mysore University. He served as a lawyer in Mangalore first as an assistant of late T. Yusuf Haidar and then as a deputy of M. Seetharam Shetty.

In 1983 he entered the judiciary as the Munsif and first class magistrate. In 1992 he was promoted as civil judge and principal magistrate. In 2000, he became the district civil judge.

He has also served as the city civil and sessions judge, chairman of Karnataka Wakf tribunal, additional director of the Karnataka Judicial Academy, chief secretary to the chief justice of the High Court, additional secretary of the state law department before joining Lokayukta institution as the additional registrar of the investigation department.

Mr. Moosa Kunhi is the first judge to become the Judicial Member of KAT promoted from a district judge rank. Hitherto this position had been reserved for the judges of the High Court.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Janata Dal (Secular) leader and MLA Satyanarayana passed away today due to multiple organ failure. He was 67.

Satyanarayana was representing Tumakuru’s Sira constituency in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He is survived by five daughters and one son.

It is learnt that he was suffering from multiple organ ailments from the past few days and was recently admitted to Manipal Hospital in the city. He breathed his last at 12:20 p.m.

He contested from JDS and worked three times as MLA and 2 times as MP. He was the chairman of KSRTC during the coalition government led by HD Kumaraswamy.

Former Prime Minister HD Devegowda mourned his death and said, “It is a shock to hear the demise of former minister and my close friend. We are friends from the past 3 decades and I cannot recall the days without him.”

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar said, “Satyanarayana was concerned for the farmers and he was a gentleman. Hearing the news hurts me and this is an irreparable loss to the political field.”

Ballari, Jan 13: Police on Monday arrested more than 30 Congress activists, including Congress MLA B Z Zameer Ahmad, who were on the way to Ballari to stage a dharna in front of MLA G Somashekhar Reddy's residence after he delivered hate speech during a pro-CAA demonstration a week ago.

Ballari Superintendent of Police SP C K Baba said that Congress MLA B Z Zameer Ahmed has not been granted permission to stage a dharna in front of the Bellary MLA’s residence.

Zameer Ahmed had asked the police to arrest Mr Reddy after he delivered a provocative speech or he will stage a dharna in front of the later's house.

SP said, “Investigations into the complaints pertaining to the provocative speech by Bellary City MLA G Somashekar Reddy is underway. In-charge Dy SP Maheshwara Gouda has taken statements of the complainants and others related to the case. A charge sheet on the same will be submitted to the court soon."

Reddy has been booked for making a provocative speech during a pro-CAA protest here in Ballari last week in which he said that Hindus outnumbered Muslims.

Following the incident police provided high police security to the MLA house and sensitive area in the city.

Bengaluru, Jul 21: Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah on Monday attacked the ruling government and said press conference of Health Minister B Siramulu was more like an exercise to hide facts than presenting proof with accurate data.

"Got to know about the press conference addressed by B Siramulu and Dr Ashwathnarayan CN to clear accusations of corruption. It looked more like an exercise to hide facts than presenting proof with accurate data," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

"It is still unclear about the points presented in the press conference. They have not answered any of my questions which were raised earlier. I will respond in detail once I receive the written explanation from the govt. Minister has claimed that both Health & Medical education department together have spent Rs323 Cr. But the data presented by them does not even add up to Rs100 Cr. What happened to the rest of the money?," asked Siddaramaiah.

He said that Centre has procured ventilators at Rs4 lakh per unit under PM Cares. But only in our state, the ventilators are procured at Rs12-Rs18 lakh per unit

"Prime Minister's Office has procured ventilators at Rs4 lakh per unit under PM Cares. But only in our state, the ventilators are procured at Rs12-Rs18 lakh per unit. Why do we see such a huge difference in price? Ministers, in the press conference, have told that quality & technological capabilities are the reasons for huge price difference. Does it mean ventilators under PM Cares lack quality? Why did they not present the technical specifications to justify the same?" he asked.

"Not just about the procurement of medical equipment, I had even asked data about food kits, PDS distribution, beds procured, quarantine centres & isolation wards. Where is the data for that?" he asked in a series of tweets.
