Stringent laws restricted entry of photographers into deep forests'

Udupi, October 4: Renowned environmentalist Dr NA Madhyastha on Monday inaugurated the wildlife photography exhibition by Raghavendra Kodangala, organized by Banna, an organization for Art and Culture, at Modern Building here.

In his inaugural address NA Madhyastha said: “Print media in India has not been using Indian wildlife photographs for the reasons unknown. Instead, photos downloaded from the internet are being used. The stringent wildlife laws have restricted the entry of photographers into deep forests. Lack of sentiments towards the wildlife among the photographers has been affecting wildlife photography”.

In fact at an ornithology conference held recently a resolution was passed not to qualify the photos of a bird inside a nest, as most of the photographers used to destroy the nest after they clicked a photo, Madhyastha added.

Photographic trainer and critic A Ishwaraiah said that wildlife photography required a lot of study. Every time a photographer visits jungle, he must go there as a child to learn new things.

Renowned photographer Gurudath Kamath, President of Udupi unit of South Kanara Photographers' Association Sridhar Shetty were also present.

Director of Banna A Dinesh Kini welcomed the gathering. Raviraj Volalambe compered the programme. Raghavendra Kodangala proposed the vote of thanks. Asmany as 36 photographs clicked by Raghavendra, in Kajiranga of Assam, Todoba of Maharastra, Bandipura, Ranganathittu and other parts of Karnataka were at the display. Exhibition will remain open for public from 10 am to 6 pm till Wednesday.

‘Lajja Gauri’ idol discovered on roadside at Barkur

Udupi, Feb 8: A rare sixth century granite idol of ‘Lajja Gauri’ has been discovered fixed on the road in Barkur village of Udupi district, according to information furnished by Dr. Shivakant Bajpai, Superintending Archaeologist of ASI Bangalore Circle. Lajja Gauri is depicted in nude form and is said to be a fertility symbol. The idol is rare, though very popular among certain cults.

Dr Shivakant Bajpai, who is on a tour of the coastal districts, said that he first came across the image when it went viral on social media. He subsequently traced it to a public road in Barkur, which is an ancient historical town of coastal Karnataka. It was the ancient capital of the Alupa kingdom and a seat of power for several centuries.

“This is a very important idol and hundreds of vehicles pass over it every day. We are rescuing it and I have issued an order to my local in-charge to keep it in safe custody. I have also sent a mail in this regard to the DC and SP of the district,” he said.

The idol is likely to be of 6th or 7th century, though further study is required to confirm a date, Dr. Bajpai said.

Lajja Gauri is a lotus-headed Hindu deity associated with abundance, fertility and sexuality, sometimes euphemistically described as Lajja ("modesty").

Railway isolation coaches ready for use: Nalin Kumar Kateel

Mangaluru, Apr 12: The spread of COVID-19 in the country has been contained through the prompt, effective and timely measures taken by the Centre, BJP Karnataka president and Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said on Sunday.

The Centre brought in stringent regulations including the lockdown at the right time and ensured that the pandemic did not spread rapidly, he told reporters here.

Kateel inspected the railway coaches which have been converted into isolation wards for infected patients at the central railway station here.

He said 20 out of the 32 railway coaches re-designed into wards by Southern Railway's Palakkad division, will be stationed here.

The wards are equipped with necessary medical equipment and facilities for doctors and paramedical staff.

Kateel said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown how such difficult situations need to be handled.

The lockdown was announced in time so that coronavirus spread was checked and all the central departments carried out their works efficiently to monitor the situation, he said.

Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath was also present.

PM urges youth to innovate, patent, produce and prosper

Bengaluru, Jan 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called on young scientists of India to "Innovate, Patent, Produce and Prosper," and said these four steps would lead our country towards faster development. The Prime Minister also stressed on the need to transform the landscape of Indian science, technology and innovation.

"The growth story of India depends on its success in the science and technology sector. There is a need to transform the landscape of Indian science, technology and innovation," Modi said.

Speaking after inaugurating the 107th Session of Indian Science Congress, he said, "My motto for the young scientists in this country is -Innovate, Patent, Produce and Prosper. These four steps will lead our country towards faster development."

"If we innovate we will patent and that in turn will make our production smoother and when we take these products to the people of our country, I'm sure they will prosper," he said, adding that innovation for the people and by the people is the direction of our new India. The Prime Minister also said he was happy to learn that India's ranking has improved in the Global Innovation Index to 52.

"Our programmes have created more technology business incubators in the last five years than in the previous 50 years. I congratulate our scientists for this achievement," he added.
