Udupi, October 4: At present, all those wanting to get driving license in Udupi will have to drive the vehicle on State Highway—Malpe-Molakalmur in front of Regional Transport Office in Adi Udupi.

However, driving on the State Highway to get license will be stopped once RTO gets a new office. This new office will have a driving track to test the driving skills of the license seekers.

The district complex in the Manipal End Point is in its final stage. In front of the District Complex, RTO office will come up at an estimated cost of Rs 4.95 crore with state of the art facilities.

The Transport department all these years neither had a building of its own nor did it have a driving track. Now, the building will have dome like structure. It will also have a mini auditorium. The building will come up on an area of 2,984.10 square feet. It is being constructed by the Karnataka Housing Board. The work has commenced in the month of March and is likely to be completed by December 2012. Once the building is ready, the RTO office will be shifted from its present office.

Lack of space

The authorities had planned to have a driving track in the three acre land at Manipal End Point. However, as the District Complex has come up near the RTO office covering two and half acre land, it would be impossible to have a driving track.

“We can have a two-wheeler track. Now we have to identify the land nearby,” said Regional Traffic Officer H N Ramesh to Deccan Herald.

Statistics

*Number of vehicles—2.06 lakh

*Two-wheelers—1.4 lakh Cars—27,500

*The registration of every month: Two-wheelers-50,00 and cars—500 to 700

*Target for revenue—Rs 62 crore in 2011-12. The authorities have already collected Rs 23.79 crore.

*The target was Rs 47 crore in 2010-11 and collected Rs 47.91 crore.

The ASHA workers are sitting in protests with a number of demands that include a minimum salary of Rs 12,000 per month.

Assuring that their matter will be taken up, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu said while speaking to reporters, "We know how hard ASHA workers have been working as frontline warriors in the fight against COVID-19. "We went to the police to allow us to protest. Officials then took us to the CM. During the meeting, he demanded some time to sort out our issues.
