Lobourers voice their demands

Mangalore, October 4: Labourers on Monday took out a procession under the banner of Dakshina Kannada district Committee of Centre of Indian Trade Unions, seeking the fulfillment of various demands including decreasing the working hours.

The workers began their procession from Town Hall and assembled in front of Deputy Commissioner's Office raising slogans against the violations of the rights of the lobourers.

Addressing to the domain CITU leader B Madhav recalled that World Federation of Trade Unions, which was founded in Paris on October 3, 1945, had decided to observe International Action Day.

The six major demands of the protest included shortening the working period of the labourers and suitable wages.

All-India Insurance Employees Association, Bank Employees Federation of India, BSNL Employees Union and various workers associations took part in the procession.

General Secretary of CITU district committee Vasanth Achary, Corporator Jayanth Shetty, and labour leaders B M Madhav, Raghavendra Rao, Sheshagiri Rao, district president of CITU J Balakrishna Shetty, U B Lokaiah, Sanjeev Bangera, Sadhashiv Das, Sukumar, Jayanth Naik, Radha, Bharathi Bolar, Gangaiah Ameen, Sunil Kumar Bajal were present.

Bengaluru, May 12: Karnataka sees the highest single day spike since the start of the pandemic in the state, higher than Sunday's spike in cases. 63 new cases have been reported in last 24 hours. 

With this, the total number of COVID-19 cases rises to 925, said the state health department's bulletin on Tuesday.

While 42 new positive cases reported from May 11, 5 pm to May 12, noon, another 21 fresh 21 cases reported by 5 pm on May 12.

To date, 921 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 31 deaths and 426 discharged," the bulletin read further.

Morning Bulletin

New cases in Bengaluru Urban 3,  Yadgir 2, Bagalkote 15, Dakshina Kannada 2, Dharwad 9, Bidar 2, Hassan 5, Ballari, Mandya, Chikkaballapura, Kalaburagi (one each).  

Evening Bulletin

Cases in Gadag (3), Kolar (5), Bengaluru Urban (1) and Davangere (11) cases. 

Cases reported on 12 May: 63

Total cases in state: 925

Mangaluru, Jul 8: A corporator and a staff in Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) have tested positive for the coronavirus. 

The woman corporator, who was under home quarantine for past few days ago, received her covid test report today. 

A staff of health department who works in MCC also tested positive for the covid-19. 

The woman corporator had recently attended a primary health centre meeting. A person who had attended the meeting was later tested positive. Hence the corporator was placed under home quarantine.

Bengaluru, May 14: Reformed underworld don Muthappa Rai, who was battling cancer for the past year, was said to be in a critical condition at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, late Wednesday night. Doctors said he was on life-support at the time of going to press. Rai (68), realtor, entrepreneur and founder of pro-Kannada organisation Jaya Karnataka, had retired from public life after he was diagnosed with cancer. He was part of an ongoing investigation into gangster Ravi Pujari, who was extradited from Senegal recently.

Born in Puttur into a Bunt family, he started out as a bank employee in Bengaluru, and later ran a live band restaurant. In 1994, he was shot in a Bengaluru court by a man dressed as a lawyer, after which he was bedridden for a couple of years.

Rai Moved to Dubai in 1996. He was deported from the UAE to India in 2002, and was arrested in Bengaluru when HT Sangliana was the police commissioner. Both Rai and Pujari had allegedly been associated with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
