Mangalore Dasara concludes with grand Shobha Yathra

October 6, 2011

Mangalore, October 6: Thousands of devotees, enthusiasts and tourists from across the state and country on Thursday evening took part in the popular Mangalore Dasara procession, which passed through the colourfully decorated seven-km route, along with folk troupes, and tiger-dance, marking the finale to the 10-day Dasara festival.

Resting on magnificent chariots the idols of Sharada, Navadurga and Ganesha brought festive spirit and spiritual feelings in the minds of devotees who thronged to have a glimpse of deities.

The colourful 'Shobha Yathra' started from Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Temple after poojas and other religious rituals at around 4.30 pm.

The idol of Ganesha was in the forefront of the procession which was followed by Adishakti, Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kooshmandini, Skandamata, Katyayini, Mahakali, Mahagowri, Siddidatri and Sharada.

Chende, dollu kunitha, veeragase kunitha, musical band and tableaux, which give description of Hindu religious heritage, preceded the idol procession. Meanwhile, all major roads in the city were decorated to welcome the procession. As the procession passed through the illuminated streets, devotees offered poojas, flowers and fruits to deities.

Later, Balipooje and Mantapabali rituals will be organised in the temple. The festival will be concluded at the Kudroli temple with the immersion of Sri Sharada Mata idol after 'Mantapa Pooja.'

Police faced hardship in diverting the traffic to other roads as there was a huge rush of people on the roads through which the procession passed.

People had gala time at their favourite “charmuri” stalls as children and women busied themselves in front of the shops selling fancy goods, footwear, toys and bangles. People were seen exchanging notes on the festivities.

Troupes of “tiger boys” exhibited their “tiger dance” in front of shops and houses, seeking donations from their owners. Some shops had displayed “no donation” boards.

At Mangaladevi Temple

Dasara festival was celebrated with great pomp and gaiety at Mangaladevi temple too. On 'Vijaydashami,' which is the last day of Dasara, idol of Mangaladevi was taken out for 'bali puje,' mounted on the head of the priest. The idol was placed inside the decked chariot and was taken for rounds around the temple.

In Kollur

As part of Navarathri, Chandikayaga and rathotsava were held at Kollur Sri Mookambika temple. Thousands of devotees took part in the rathotsava.

The major highlight of Vijaya Dashami was the ritual of 'Vidyaramba', a ritual which marks the beginning of the education of the children. Nearly 3,500 children mostly from Kerala, and also from Karnataka and other places participated in the Vidyarambha.

New Delhi, April 5: Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer a "credible scientific and rational" explanation for his candle-lighting call and said he is giving "meaningless tasks" to an already exhausted population.

The JD(S) leader questioned if the Prime Minister asked the nation to observe a candle-light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP.

"Has the PM slyly asked the nation to observe a candle light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP? April 6 being its foundation day, what else can explain the choice of date & time for this event? I challenge the PM to offer a credible scientific and rational explanation," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"The government is yet to provide PPEs for doctors and make test kits affordable for the common man. Without telling the nation what concrete steps are being taken to combat COVID-19 menace, the prime minister is giving meaningless tasks to an already exhausted population," he tweeted.

"It is shameful to convert the national crisis into an event of self aggrandizement & it is beyond shameful to push the hidden agenda of his party in the face of global calamity. May sense prevail upon the PM," the JDS leader said in another tweet.

Amid a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, Prime Minister Modi on Friday appealed to countrymen to light diyas and candles on April 5 at 9 pm to fight the darkness spread by the pandemic. He asked the people to turn off all the lights in their homes and stand at doors or balconies and light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights for 9 minutes on April 5.

Last month, PM Modi had asked the people to come out in their balconies and clap and beat utensils to show appreciation for doctors, nurses and others helping fight coronavirus on 'Janata Curfew'.

Bengaluru, Apr 8: In another incident of health staff involved in coronavirus containment facing trouble, two ASHA workers were allegedly manhandled at Kudachi in Belagavi district in Karnataka on Tuesday while undertaking a survey following detection of four COVID-19 cases with Tablighi links in the area, police said.

The district authorities have intensified door-to-door survey in Kudachi after four people who had attended the Tablighi Jamat religious conference in New Delhi last month tested positive for coronavirus in nearby Raibagh.

“Today when two ASHA workers went to Kudachi, some miscreants snatched away their phones. We are investigating whether they were beaten up also,” a police officer investigating the matter told PTI.

A few days ago, four ASHA workers here were manhandled when they went for a door-to-door survey and police have arrested five people from a minority community. They have been remanded to judicial custody by a court.

Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda had on Monday condemned incidents of attacks on doctors and health department workers and sought protection for them.
