The deceased has been identified as Mahadeva Mane, a Bijapur-based personnel of Anti Naxal Force (ANF) police.
Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Labhu Ram and Inspector General of Police Alok Mohan (Western Range) confirmed the incident.
Mr Mohan said the incident occurred near a village called Manjalakadu, about 17 km from Belthangady.
There was a tip off about the movement of 'naxalites' and a “strong contingent” of the ANF had been positioned to ambush them, he said.
“Not many of them could be sighted because of darkness”, the IGP said. Details will be known when policemen undertake combing of the area after daybreak, he added.
The ANF contingent had begun combing operations around 8 pm on Saturday along with the support of local police.
Unofficial sources said that in the mid nigh the police contingent countered an armed group of 'Netravati' naxalites led by Vikram Gowda.
It is learnt that several people from both the groups were injured in a fierce exchange of gun fire.
