House burgled; cash, Jewellery worth Rs 9 lakh stolen

Uppinangady, October 13: In a major burglary, which came to light last night, thieves broke into a house near here and made away with cash and jewelleries worth Rs 9 lakh in the absence of family members.

The thieves gained entry into the house of Kunnhi Monu, son of H Abbas Haji, located at Athur in Ramkunja village by breaking open the door at the second floor and decamped with the valuables kept in the wardrobe of the bedroom.

It is assumed that thieves might have easily opened the wardrobe, as the key had been kept in the same room.

In a complaint registered at a local police station, the house owner has said that around 45 pawan gold and a cash amount of Rs 52 thousand. The total loss for the house owner is estimated to be Rs 9 lakh, police said.

Kunnhi Monu works in Al-khobar in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His wife Ayiha and three children were in the house. However, in order to spend holidays, Ayisha had taken her children to her parents' house. A shock was awaiting them when they returned home around 7 pm on Wednesday.

Local Police Sub Inspector Priya Paul and team rushed to the spot for investigation. Finger print experts were called in and sniffer dogs were pressed into action within a couple of hours.

On Thursday morning Superintended of Police Labu Ram, DySP Prabhakar and Circle Inspector H Y Jagadish too visited the spot.

A case has been registered, based on the complaint given by Rashid, brother of Kunnhi Monu.

Jan 21: Info Edge (India)'s shareholding in Zomato reduces to 22.71%; Uber receives 9.99% stake in Zomato.

Info Edge (India) announced that Zomato Media (Zomato) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Uber's food delivery business in India (Uber) in an all-stock transaction, which gives Uber 9.99% ownership in Zomato.

Uber Eats in India will discontinue operations and direct restaurants, delivery partners, and users of the Uber Eats apps to the Zomato platform, effective 21 January 2020.

Upon closing of said acquisition, the company's shareholding in Zomato shall stand reduced to about 22. 71 % on fully converted & diluted basis.

Mangaluru, May 24: Muslims across coastal Karnataka today observed Eid Al-Fitr by offering Eid prayers at home instead of mosques and Eidgahs.

For the first time the cities of Mangaluru and Udupi wore a deserted look on the day of Eid. Strict implementation of the lockdown was seen in the both cities. All vehicles except those transporting essentials remained off the roads.

Following the orders of orders of the deputy commissioners of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and guidance of religious scholars and Qadhis, Muslims preferred not to venture out of homes on the day of Eid. The 36 hours of complete lockdown which came into force yesterday at 7 p.m. will relaxed tomorrow morning at 7 a.m.

The Eidgah at Light House Hill area of the city and other prominent mosques, where thousands used to gather to offer namaz during festivals, were empty today.

Photos of simple Eid celebrations were share on social media to keep the spirit of festival alive in times of pandemic.

This time Muslims in the region had also decided not to buy any new clothes for Eid. Campaigns were run in the moth of Ramadan to encourage the Muslims to donate the amount of new clothes to the needy instead.

Throughout the month of Ramadan Muslim organisations were distributing food among the stranded migrant labourers in the region.

Udupi, Feb 27: Silver ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh were stolen from the Badakere Laxmi Janardhana temple under Byndoor police station limits in Udupi district. 

The theft which reportedly took place on Wednesday late night, came to light today morning.

Notably, this is the fourth incident reported during the last two months.
