BJP Govt. mulls separate syllabus for Sunni Madrasas in Karnataka

Mangalore, October 14: Bharatiya Janata Party led Karnataka government is considering to introduce separate syllabus for Sunni Madrasa students in the state, according to Abbas Shariff Under Secretary, Social Welfare Department (Minority Welfare).

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a programme here, Mr Shariff said that the government is also thinking to convene a meeting of the leaders of Madrasa management committees of the twin districts to find out a solution for the confusion among a section of Muslim community over the text-books in this region.

Most of the Madrasas run by Ahl-u-Sunnat-wal-Jama'at (Sunnis), a group of Muslims controlled by Kerala based mullahs, are dependent either on AP group or on EK group text-books.

Conflict between the above two groups for various reasons including choosing text books for Madrasas has remained a matter of concern for many years.

However, a few Muslim organisations, which question the legitimacy of mullahs and proclaim Qur'an and Hadith as the final word in religious matters, have prepared separate text-books for Madrasa students.

Mr Shariff said that he has already issued a notice to all Madrasas urging to the continuation of the textbooks they were following till August 31, 2011.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: The Customs Officers of Airport Team-II at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) on Thursday intercepted a passenger who attempted to smuggle gold worth Rs 9.39 lakhs.

The team led by Rajesh Poojary nabbed the passenger who attempted to smuggle 233.18 grams of gold strips concealed inside a rechargeable emergency light and solar sensor wall light.

The officials said a passenger named Mohammed Mahir Patla (24) from Kasaragod, who arrived from Dubai yesterday evening by Air India flight number IX384 attempted to smuggle the gold.

Bengaluru, Apr 17: Karnataka on Thursday inked an agreement with the Sri Sri Ravi Shankar-led Art of Living to rejuvenate water sources and improve groundwater recharge in nine districts.

Rural Development & Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Minister KS Eshwarappa held talks with Ravi Shankar on the project. The partnership seeks to take up works through funds available under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

The project proposes to take up works in Shivamogga, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chitradurga, Ballari, Kolar, Yadgir, Kodagu and Tumakuru districts. Under NREGA, works such as construction of check dams, construction of contours, bunds and so on will be commissioned.

Bengaluru, Apr 22: In order to infuse confidence among people to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, Karnataka government on Wednesday launched a helpline 'Apthamitra' with an exclusive toll free number and a mobile app, aimed at providing required medical advice and guidance for those in need.

The help line and app was launched by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa in the presence of senior Ministers and officials of the department.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Yediyurappa said that the help line was need at this crucial juncture. “If anyone has symptoms of Coronavirus, they can call the helpline from their home, get medical advice or assistance and get their doubts cleared. 

People who call to know the symptoms, an expert team of doctors will advice on what to do next.”
