Mangalore, October 17: The state government should apologise Peoples Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasir Madani, who is lodged in Bangalore Central Jail since past 14 months, and release him immediately and unconditionally, said 'Dalit Voice' editor V T Rajshekhar.

He was speaking after inaugurating Human Rights Protection conference demanding the release of Madani, organised by Karnataka Justice Forum here on Sunday.

Mr Shetty said that Madani was put behind bars only for political reasons although Karnataka police did not have any evidence to confirm the allegations against him.

Frustrated by the brutality of Brahminist oppression, Madani had waged a real 'Jihad'. In order to curb his democratic struggle, Brahminist minds joined their hands to send him to prison once again through false and baseless allegations, Mr Rajshekhar said.

He said that the act of BJP led Karnataka government to re arrest a person who was acquitted by court after spending nine long years in Coimbatore Central Prison for a crime not committed by him, is apparent violation of human rights. “The silence of Supreme Court, which was supposed to intervene in this matter, is also disheartening”, he added.

Stating that thousands of Muslims across the country have been subjected to violence and atrocity, the veteran journalist lamented that except in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Muslims have failed to show resistance against the injustice. “Irony is that Gujarati Muslims are now supporting chief minister Narendra Modi, who is responsible for the killing of thousands of Muslims in 2002 riots”, he said.

If the people continued their silence over Madani's arrest, many Muslims in this country may face the fate of Madani, he warned.

Alhadi Ibrahim Thangal presided over the programme. Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike secretary K L Ashok, PDP working secretary Swami Varkalraj Thiruvananthapuram and PFI Karnataka branch president Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe were present among others.

Mangaluru, May 26: Days after the government of India approved the use of chartered flights for the repatriation of Indians stranded across the world amidst covid-19 lockdown, two NRI entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia have offer to bear the cost of repatriation if they get formal green signal to repatriate stranded Indians from Dammam to Mangaluru International Airport before June 5.

Althaf Ullal and Basheer Sagar, the two Kannadiga Directors of Al Khobar-based Saqco, have made this offer in a letter written to Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

The duo have assured that their company will bear the cost of the first chartered flight from Dammam to Mangaluru if the government paves way for its operation by June 5.

It is learnt that many private airliners have come forward to operate chartered flight and are waiting for final clearance from the government. It will cost approximately Rs 45 lakh to hire chartered flight with 180 capacity from Dammam to Mangaluru.

Pregnant women, medical emergency cases, senior citizens on visit visas, those who lost jobs due to lockdown among other stranded Indians will be given priority in this flight, they said.

"Our company will completely bear this cost. Passengers only need to bear the cost of institutional quarantine after reaching Mangaluru," they have clarified.

Bengaluru, May 24: Karnataka Tourism Minister CT Ravi said that coronavirus lockdown has severely marred the tourism industry in the state and the government will revive it in a phased manner.

"It would be beneficial if hotels are opened keeping in mind few restrictions. At present, the tourism industry has fallen flat making it very difficult to promote tourism in the state," Ravi said.

"Our department has planned to promote tourism in a phased manner. In the first phase, we would focus on native tourism; then in the second phase, we will promote inter-district travel; in the third phase, we will put weight behind inter-state tourism and in the fourth phase, we would be promoting international travel and tourism," he added.

Karnataka's COVID-19 count surges to 1,958 with 216 new cases of the virus reported in the last 24 hours, said the Health Department in a bulletin on Saturday.

Out of the total number of cases, 1,307 patients are active cases and 608 patients have been discharged. The total number of fatalities due to COVID-19 in the state has risen to 42.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: The Opposition Congress in Karnataka on Wednesday accused the BJP government, headed by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, of showing discrimination in distribution of relief material to those affected by the lockdown, clamped to check the spread of Novel Coronavirus, by favouring constituencies represented by the ruling BJP Legislators.

Despite that, the party intends to extend full cooperation to the government during this hour of crisis without indulging in politics, it urged the administration to be “transparent”.

''We have had our (Congress) Task Force meeting today, during which we discussed several matters. There is a lot of difference between the government's talk and its deeds,'' KPCC President D K Shivakumar said.
