Contract workers stage protest against airport management

Mangalore, October 17: Mangalore Airport Workers' Association started an indefinite protest outside the entrance to the airport, on Monday condemning sacking of contract workers without any reason. The protesters demanded the airport authorities to re-appoint the workers to their duty at the earliest.

Addressing the protesters Association Member Krishnananda said that several local people working in the airport on contract basis since many years.

Recently the contractor who took the responsibility of maintaining the old airport has removed several locals working at the airport.

He said that so far seven have lost their job. “The people who have been sacked belong to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and backward communities. Many are those who have got job because they had lost their land to the Airport expansion project,” claimed Krishnananda adding that though they had met the Mangalore Airport Director M R Vasudeva a couple of times and brought this issue to his notice he has not paid any heed to it.

“We felt that he was supporting the move of the contractor. When we pleaded with him to help the workers, he told us that he will be employing workers from Jharkhand and other states who are willing to work at much lesser salary,” alleged Krishnananda adding that the Mangalore Airport Director M R Vasudeva himself is against the local work force.

The Samiti said that the contract of the new airport too has been given to the same contractor and even here the conspiracy of cutting down on local workers is going on relentlessly.

The Samiti said that even if the contractor is changed, priority should be given to
the workers who have been working in the airport from so many years and measures should be taken to safeguard their interest.

Authorities should take steps to stop the harassment of workers by higher officials, dissolve the contract of the present contractor who has been meting out injustice at the workers and provide all facilities that the workers deserve to get legally.

Another member of the Mangalore Airport Workers Association said that the security of the airport is at stake as the workers are being recruited by the authorities without the very necessary Police Clearance Certificate (PCC).

Protesters shouted out slogans against the MangaloreAirport Director M R Vasudeva , the contractor and the system existing at the airport management level.

Udupi, Apr 9: Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesha said that criminal cases would be booked against owners of houses and sheds who were collecting rent from those, including workers, staying in rented houses.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Mr Jagadeesha said that to prevent the spread of COVID-19, restrictions had been imposed throughout the district under Section 144 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The administration had through an earlier order made it clear that house owners and shed owners should not collect rent from their tenants and workers for March and April.

But the administration had received complaints that some house owners and shed owners were collecting rent despite the order.

Udupi, Jan 25: Mangalore International Airport (MIA) culprit Aditya Rao has revealed that after placing the explosive device he went to Malpe and made threat call of placing bomb in the Indigo flight.

Rao, who is in police custody, on Saturday, was brought to Malpe under tight security by the investigating officer ACP Belliyappa for spot investigation. On January 20, Aditya had come to the Mangaluru airport and planted an explosive device before going to Malpe and made a threat call about placing a bomb in the Indigo flight. He was just a couple of kilometers away from the Malpe police station while making the call.

Sitting outside an egg selling shop which opens only after 6:00 pm, Aditya had called the Airport and informed that a bomb was placed in the Indigo flight. Later he destroyed the sim card and left to Bengaluru to surrender.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Muzrai Department of Karnataka on Tuesday issued a circular requesting all temples in the state to perform special puja on Wednesday following the 'bhoomi pujan' for Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The circular was issued on the directions of Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Commissioner's Office, Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department Karnataka said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on August 5.

The construction of Ram temple will begin in Ayodhya after the foundation ceremony in which various dignitaries from political and religious fields are scheduled to participate.

The apex court, on November 9 last year, had directed the Central government to hand over the site at Ayodhya for the construction of a Ram temple.

The formation of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust was announced on February 5 for the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya. The Trust has been mandated by the Central government to oversee the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.
