Youth killed, four injured as car crashes into tree

Bhatkal, October 28: A youth was killed on spot and four others sustained injuries when a car in which they were travelling rammed into a roadside tree on the outskirts of the town.

The deceased has been identified as Venkatesh Naika (26), a native of Hadilu near Bhatkal. Nagaraja Gonda (29), Chandra Manju Gonda (22), Krishna Narayana Gonda (40) and Sudha (30), have been hospitalised with severe injuries.

The tragedy occurred at around 10: 00pm on Thursday, under the limits of Baindur police station, when the five people were travelling from Bhatkal to Kundapur on Maruti Omni.

It is assumed that the driver lost his balance over the vehicle, while negotiating a curve near Shiroor, and crashed into the tree in the darkness.

Police rushed to the spot and made necessary arrangement to shift the injured to a nearby hospital.

Mangaluru, Jan 21: The city police arrested the auto driver of the auto-rickshaw allegedly used by the suspect to place the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Mangaluru International Airport.

The identity of the auto driver is yet to be ascertained.

The police are currently interrogating the auto driver to obtain details about the suspect, according to reports.

The IED recovered from a bag at the airport was defused in an open field by the personnel of the bomb disposal squad yesterday.

The visuals of the suspect have also been shared by the police for his identification.

Mangaluru, Jun 29: A hospital set up in 1848 in the Port City has to remain closed till July 5 as majority of the Doctors and Staff at Lady Goschen Government Hospital are quarantined after coming in contact with a COVID-19 infected person.

Hospital Medical Superintendent said that both in-patient and out-patient wings of the hospital will remain closed till July 5 as there is a need to fumigate and sanitise all the departments of the hospital. Patients for treatment under 'Ayushman Bharat – Arogya Karnataka' scheme will be sent to private medical colleges with the referral card from the hospital. The hospital will start functioning normally from July 6.

The Lady Goschen Government Hospital, earlier known as the maternity Hospital, is the oldest hospital in the district and dates back to 1848.

Bengaluru, May 12: In a scathing attack on the ruling BJP in Karnataka and warning the Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa government against any move to amend the Labour laws and APMC through an ordinance, former chief minister and JDS leader H D Kumaraswamy on Tuesday asked Mr Yediyurappa to work in the interest of the people and not to budge under any pressure from the Centre or to please party bosses.

Speaking to media here on Tuesday he questioned the urgency to bring forward such ordinances on important subjects and asked the government to have a public debate on it and also discuss it in the assembly.

“I'm warning the government… I have been watching everything silently till now, I have not caused any embarrassment to the government. I want to tell the government, don’t push us to do it,” Kumaraswamy said
