Pollution, sewage issues dominate Udupi CMC meet

Mangalore, October 30: The issues of alleged pollution from a fishmeal company at Malpe and lack of underground drainage system in some parts of the city dominated the general body meeting of the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) here on Saturday. Raising the issue, councillor Mohan Upadhya of the Bharatiya Janata Party said that there were many complaints from the people about pollution being caused by a fishmeal company in Malpe.

Raghupati Bhat, MLA, said that many road accidents had taken place owing to spillage of sticky water from the trucks carrying fish to the fishmeal company in Malpe. The CMC should stop the movement of trucks carrying fish from other States to Malpe, he said.

The district administration should be urged to instruct all six fishmeal companies in the district, including the one in Malpe, not to use fish from other States. The fishmeal companies could use fish available locally. This would help local fishermen, Mr. Bhat said. Leader of the Opposition in the CMC Council Jayananda of the Congress said the fishmeal company at Malpe had been functioning for the past 40 years. The CMC itself had given a “no objection certificate” to the company in 2007. It was not right to discuss the issue in the council meeting as the matter was in the High Court, he said.

Bengaluru, Jun 24: Karnataka Minister of Medical Education Dr K Sudhakar said on Tuesday that the directors of institutions will be held responsible if any there are any complaints and lack of facilities in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

'Since a couple of days, there are reports in media regarding the admission of COVID-19 patients, lack of hygiene and the supply of sub-standard food to patients. The country is appreciating Karnataka and Bengaluru for controlling the spread of coronavirus. This was possible due to tireless efforts from past several months and these kinds of reports emerging now cannot be tolerated," Sudhakar said.

He added, "There can be no compromise in the treatment of COVID-19 patients. It must be ensured that these kinds of complaints will not be repeated. Directors of hospitals will be held responsible if there are complaints."

The medical education minister further said that asymptomatic patients will be kept in COVID-Care Centres and if they develop symptoms in the care centres, they will be shifted to hospitals for further treatment.

"Since the COVID-19 cases are increasing, private hospitals have been roped in to treat coronavirus patients. Officials have to ensure that beds are reserved and all arrangements are made as per the government order. Guidelines will soon be issued for monitoring asymptomatic cases in COVID care centres," he added.

Karnataka on Tuesday reported 322 fresh COVID-19 positive cases and eight deaths.
According to the state health department, the total number of positive cases has mounted to 9,721 and 150 deaths. So far, 6,004 people have been discharged.

Shivamogga, May 21: A quarantine facility at Bapuji Nagar in Shivamogga on Wednesday evening was vandalised, by a group of people. leading to chaos.

The police had to resort to baton-charge to control the situation.

Locals were opposing the facility, which is being used to isolate travellers from different states in the view of coronavirus.

Deputy Commissioner KB Sivakumar said that the police department will investigate and book a case against the protesters.

Gadag, Feb 20: A 33-year-old Muslim man is all set to become a seer at Muruga Rajendra Mutt in Gadag.

Ordained by Sri Murugarajendra Koraneswara Swami of the mutt, Dewan Sharief Mullah claims he was taking the step not under any duress but after being "guided by the almighty".

"Nobody asked me to do it. The almighty came in my mind and guided me.... They have put the sacred thread and given me the responsibility. They have given me the 'Ishta-linga' and this honour. I have done the 'Ishta-linga dharan'. I will walk on the path of dharma. Love and sacrifice is the message given to me. That is what I want to propagate," he said.

Sri Murugarajendra Koraneswara Swami said, "It does not matter what caste you belong to. If God appears to you for a path of goodwill and sacrifice, you will do it regardless of the manmade restrictions of birth and caste."
