Colourful Rajyotsava celebration in DK; 45 achievers honoured with award

Mangalore, November 1: Kannada Rajyotsava celebration in Dakshina Kannada district was held with great fervour on Tuesday as thousands of uniform clad students exhibited the cultural talent.

Hoisting the national flag and receiving the guard of honour at Nehru Maidan, here District in-charge Minister Krishna J Palemar highlighted the achievements of BJP led-stage government in his Rajyotsava message.

He said that special grant has been sanctioned for 121 projects in the second phase for Mangalore's development.

He said that eco-friendly decisions such as solid waste management, ban on use of plastics below 40 micron are being implemented very effectively in across the district.

Wishing all people of the district a joyous 56th Rajyotsava, the minister exclaimed that eight Jnanpith awards are a proof for the prosperity of Kannada language.

Yakshagana

Mr Palemar said that there was a need for a thorough study and research into the contributions of Yakashagana towards Kannada literature.

Suggesting that Yakshagana Bayalata Academy and university should jointly take up this cause, he said the BJP-led state government was committed to extend any necessary aid for this.

Cultural Extravaganza

March past by police band, DAR, Civil Police, traffic police, Home Guards, Fire police, NCC, Bharath Seva Dal and others was followed by a cultural extravaganza by the students from various schools.

Students danced to the tunes of various patriotic songs enthralling the audience. The programme started with a grand procession from Jyothi circle in which various cultural troupes performed spreading the fragrance of tuluva tradition.

Rajyotsava Awards

As many as 45 achievers in various fields from the district were conferred with the Dakshina Kannada Rajyotsava Award-2011.

District-level special talent awards 2011-12 sponsored by Women and Children development department were also conferred on the occasion on Neha B, Shubham Varnekar, Vaishnavi Ballal, K N Bharath Rao, Shalon Johnapas, Ananthram U R, Hasta R Aithal and Chinmaya.

N Yogish Bhat, Dy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly, N S Chennappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner, Seemanth Kumar Singh, Mangalore City Police Commissioner, U T Khader, Mangalore MLA, Abhay Chandra Jain, Mulky-Moodbidri MLA, B Nagaraj Shetty, Coastal Development Authority Chairman, Praveen Anchan, Mangalore Mayor, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, District Kannada Sahitya Parishat President and Dr K N Vijayaprakash, CEO, DK Zilla Panchayat were present among others.

Udupi, May 18: As many as eight fresh coronavirus positive cases have been reported in coastal districts of Udupi and Uttara Kannada. 

No fresh positive case was reported in Dakshina Kannada since yesterday.

According to Health and Family Welfare Department, two men aged 38 and 24 years, an 8-year-old boy and a 24-year-old woman tested positive for coronavirus in Udupi district today. 

All of them were under quarantine after returning from Maharashtra recently. They were shifted to covid-19 hospital for treatment. With this the number of covid-19 positive cases in Udupi district mounted to 15.

Meanwhile, Uttara Kannada district also received a jolt with four more cases. Yesterday it had reported eight cases.

Mysuru, Feb 21: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said Amulya Leona, who raised pro-Pakistan slogans, had links with Naxalites.

Yediyurappa said that Amulya's links with Naxalites have been proved in an investigation. "She must be punished and action will be taken against the people behind it," he said.

"Bail should not be given to Amulya. Her father has also said he won't protect her. Its proved now that she had contacts with Naxals. Proper punishment should be given," he added.

While speaking to reporters at Mysuru Airport, the chief minister said unless actions are taken against the organisations who provoke them to make such comments, it is not possible to control them.

Yediyurappa suspects that the incident was a conspiracy to disturb peace and harmony in the state.

Minister B C Patil said that such incidents should not repeat. "It appears that youths are misused for such anti-national activities, he said.

Mangaluru, Jun 1: A youth was hacked to death and two others suffered critical injuries following a fight between two gangs at Yekkaru Devaragudde near Kateel under the limits of Bajpe police station last night.

The deceased has been identified as Keertan (20), a resident of Marakada. The injured are Nitin (20) and Manesh (20). It is learnt that old animosity led to the attack and murder.

According to sources, members of both gangs were friends in the past. They had become enemies of each other following a fight regarding sand mining.

Sources said that Keertan, Nitin, and Manesh had reportedly invited their rival gang to Devaragudde for some discussion. A verbal friction arose between the two gangs and it culminated in the attack by the rival gang members with daggers. Keertan reportedly died on the sport. The other two were taken to hospital.

The accused fled the scene soon after committing the crime. A case has been registered at Bajpe police station. A manhunt has been launched to nab the accused.
