Two motorcyclists crushed to death under goods tempo

Bantwal, November 3: Two people were killed in a head on collision between a motorbike and a goods tempo on National Highway-75 at Bolangady near Kalladka on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased have been identified as Uday Kumar, a cable operator and Harish, a pick-up driver, both residents of Kalladka.

Eyewitnesses said that the accident occurred due to rash driving by goods tempo driver, who rammed into the oncoming motorbike on the wrong side of the road.

The accident occurred at around 2:00 pm, when the motorcyclists were on their way to BC Road from Kalladka.

Both Harish and Uday were crushed under the wheels of speedy tempo, which was plying from Mangalore. They breathed their last on their way to hospital.

The motorbike was dragged for some distance by the tempo, which was stopped by a tree while plunging in to a road side gorge.

The driver and cleaner of the goods tempo escaped from the scene.

Buntwal town police sub inspector Vivekanand and constables visited the spot. A case has been registered.

Private hospitals in Karnataka can't deny treatment to patients having COVID-19 or symptoms

Bengaluru, Jun 28: The Karnataka government on Saturday issued an order, directing private hospitals not to deny treatment to patients with coronavirus and COVID-19 like symptoms.

"Non-compliance of this order will attract punishment under sections of Disaster Management Act 2005," an order read.

Meanwhile, people coming from Maharashtra will be placed in seven-day institutional quarantine followed by seven-day home quarantine in Karnataka, the state government said.

People coming from other states will need to undergo 14-day home quarantine.

Mangaluru: KMC house surgeons stage protest against overdue stipend

Mangaluru, Feb 12: As many as 54 house surgeons from Kasturba Medical College (KMC) staged a protest near the casualty of the Wenlock Hospital on Wednesday over over non-payment of monthly stipend.

House surgeons, who have studied MBBS under the government quota, have not received their stipend from last 11 months. They have to get a monthly stipend of Rs 20,000 during their one-year internship at the government hospital.

The protesting house surgeons alleged that their stipends have not been released despite Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s written order dated December 24.

Mangaluru expat Mohammed Kana passes away in Saudi Arabia

Mangaluru, May 15: Mohammed Kana, son of late Ismail Kana and grandson of late Dr M S Bapanad Mulki passed away in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia due to heart attack on Thursday. He was 57.

Hailing from Mangaluru, Mohammed Kana was working in Saudi Arabia for past 30 years. He is survived by his wife, son and a daughter.

He was involved in various social and welfare activities in India and Saudi Arabia. His tragic demise has left huge vacuum in his family and community at large.
