Mangalore, November 5: Students of Pompei Government School, Urwa, were a happy lot. The 'Student Internet world' organized by department of Information Technology/Bio-Technology, SDM Law College, on Thursday sought to teach Class VIII students how to operate the internet.

Muthappa S, a student of Pompei High School, said, "The teachers here are very helpful. They taught us how to use the internet, send email, view pictures and play games."

Parasappa, his classmate, said, Although he had been to cyber cafes before, all he used to do was play games. "Here, we have been taught the basics of internet browsing and how to send and receive emails," Parasappa pointed.

Vishal K and Chetan Bhandarkar, BCA II year student of SDM College of Business Management, who are organized the event, said while the main aim was to provide students from government schools basic working knowledge of internet, the major hindrance was lack of basic computing skills among some of the children. Chetan said, "Some of the students did not know how to start the computer, let alone handle a mouse and these are some of the difficulties we are trying to overcome."

Chetan mentioned that the college has been organizing this event for five years and the total attendance this year was 121 students. The students attend theory classes, they are provided with their own computer during lab sessions and the student-teacher ratio is a healthy 2:1.

Sunya, a shy girl, admitted that she knew little about computers before she attended the workshop, but now she is eager to learn. "I now know how to view pictures and games," she said.

Bantwal, Apr 29: Two people were injured after the truck laden with poultry feed rammed into the compound wall of after catching fire on Wednesday, at Marnabailu near Melkar.

Police said the injured were the driver and an assistant in the truck. They were admitted to a private hospital at Mangaluru.

However, it is not yet clear whether the truck transporting poultry feed from a company at Kandur caught fire after colliding against the electric pole or with the compound wall.

Mangaluru, Jan 3: A young entrepreneur reportedly jumped off the Netravati bridge near Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city today morning.

The youth who allegedly committed suicide has been Navesh Kottari, 30, a resident of Ullalbail. He was the proprietor of N J Shamiyana.

The incident took place at around 6:30 a.m. Police and fire brigade rushed to the spot after sometime and launched search operation for the body in the river Netravati.

The body was retrieved in the afternoon.

Mangaluru, Jun 25: In a shocking development, as many as five post-graduate (PG) doctors have tested positive for coronavirus in Mangaluru. 

The one male and four female doctors – all aged around 28 years – are asymptomatic and are being treated at the designated covid hospital in the city.

All the five PG doctors of Kasturba Medical College were deputed at Govt. Lady Goschen Hospital and District Wenlock Hospital (Covid Hospital).

Meanwhile, around 30 medicos have been quarantined.

According to sources, the five doctors were staying in a residential apartment in the city. The apartment is likely to be sealed.
