Christian Council condemns 'selective targeting' of minorities

Mangalore, November 8: All India Christian Council, Karnataka Chapter (AICC) and Karnataka Missions Network has condemned 'selective targeting' of the minorities in Karnataka.

Addressing a news conference here on Monday, Justice Michael Saldanha said that this selective targeting of minority is tearing apart the social fabric of the sub continent.


Calling the attacks on churches as pre planned act and not sporadic incidents, Saldanha said that though such incidents had occurred in Gujarat, Orissa, North Eastern states, the incidents have come under control in these states. Unfortunately, such attacks started in Mangalore and continue to happen even today.

Talking about the attitude of the law enforcing authorities, Saldanha said that in 2008 Church attack, as many as 367 false cases were filed, of which 30 per cent cases were booked against innocent students who are even today appearing before the Court for no fault of theirs.

“Though a section of cases were withdrawn, it has come to light that cases booked against the culprits have been withdrawn while cases booked against the victims are still left as it is,” he said adding that though a person has been nabbed in the recent attack, one has to look beyond the obvious and try to know the invisible hands that have operated behind this person in executing the crime.

Karnataka Missions Network Chairman Walter J Maben said that the situation has gone from bad to worse and in this juncture, the community is wondering if it should still remain quite. “Whenever we ask the police about the action taken to nab the culprits in these cases of vandalism, they say action is being taken. Wonder if withdrawing cases on accused is the only action taken by them,” he said.

Narrating the state under which the smaller denominations have been functioning, he said that recently a prayer center head in Ullal was summoned by the Police to inform that they need to possess exclusive permission from the Deputy Commissioner to carry on prayer meets.

AICC Co-ordinator Anand Kumar Jogul said that State Government has been releasing lot of funds for Hindu religious centres and the heads for their services to the society. “Even we are doing service to the Society. Why are funds not released to us,” he questioned.

Komu Soudhardha Vedike General Secretary K L Ashok among others was present.

The news conference was held in the backdrop of the 'Persecuted Pastors' Conference' organised by AICC in the city on Monday.

Bengaluru, Jul 23: Karnataka on Thursday recorded a biggest single-day surge of over 5,000 cases and 97 related fatalities, taking the total number of people who tested positive for the virus to 80,863, the health department said. 

The day also saw a record 2,071 patients getting discharged after recovery.

Out of 5,030 fresh cases reported, a whopping 2,207 cases were from Bengaluru urban alone.

As of July 23 evening, cumulatively 80,863 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 1,616 deaths and 29,310 discharges, the health department said in its bulletin.

It said, out of 49,931 active cases, 49,291 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 640 are in ICU. Out of the 97 deaths reported on Thursday 48 are from Bengaluru urban, followed by Mysuru 8, Dakshina Kannada 7 and others.

Most of the dead are either with a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI).

Among the districts where the new cases were reported, Bengaluru urban accounts for 2,207, followed by Raichur 258, Kalaburagi 229, Dakshina Kannada 218, and others.

Bengaluru urban district tops the list of positive cases, with a total of 39,200 infections, followed by Dakshina Kannada 4,209 and Kalaburagi 3,370.

Mandya, July 30: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has done a commendable job in tackling the Covid-19 situation and floods and that the question of changing the leadership does not arise.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 5,503 new cases of Covid-19 and 92 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 1,12,504 and the death toll to 2,147.

Speaking to reporters here, Kateel said, "Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi has gone to Delhi to discuss the projects sanctioned to state with the central minister. There is no need to read too much into it."

Replying to a query on graft charges against the BSY government by the Congress, Kateel said, "Congress national president, state unit president are out on bail in graft cases . Why did a Congress leader who calls himself a bande (rock) has approached court seeking stay on CBI probe? Before making any allegations against the government, they should think about 'irregularities' in Indira Canteen and housing schemes," he charged.

Instead of instilling confidence and hope among the people in these testing times, the Congress is unnecessarily creating fear with petty politics, he told reporters in Shravanabelagola, Hassan district.

"The Yediyurappa-led BJP government is working day and night to tackle the Covid-19. Similarly, several non-governmental organisations have joined hands with the government in the fight against the virus. But, the Congress is only creating confusion by issuing baseless statements," Kateel said.

Mangaluru, May 22: An elderly cardiac patient from Dakshina Kannada, who was stranded in Saudi Arabia due to covid-19 lock-down, has finally reached his homeland thanks to the timely intervention by Humanity Forum Jubail and Indian Social Forum.

The elderly man hailing from Kadaba area of Dakshina Kannada was admitted to a hospital in Madinah. However, his condition continued to worsen due to lack of proper treatment. The efforts by his family members to bring him back home had not yielded results.

Meanwhile, one of the relatives of the patient, Ansari Suratkal, who happens to be a DKSC activist, brought the issue to the notice of the Karnataka unit of the Indian Social Forum in Dammam. ISF contacted Humanity Forum president Zakariya Jokatte, who helped the patient to speak directly union minister D V Sadananda Gowda in a video conference organised by coastaldigest.com.

Humanity Forum also persuaded the Indian Embassy to allow the stranded cardiac patient to fly back to India through Dammam-Bengaluru repatriation flight on May 20. 

However, it was not easy for the patient to travel from Madinah to Dammam International Airport due to lock-down and curfew. ISF not only obtained travel permission for him but also arranged vehicle. Jeddah and Riyadh units of ISF helped in obtaining permission letter in their respective places in spite of travel ban imposed by the police. Madinah unit of ISF arranged vehicle for transportation. Zakariya Jokatte bore the air ticket and other expenses of the patient.
