Mangalore, November 9: The need for steps to prevent damage resulting from lightning dominated the quarterly meeting to review development programmes in Mangalore taluk on Monday.

MLA Abhayachandra Jain said lightning had caused loss of life and damaged many electrical appliances in several houses in the region. Lightning had damaged crops, especially the coconut and areca palms, he said.

“This cannot be treated just as a natural calamity. Steps need to be taken to reduce the effect of lightning,” he said.

Moodbidri tahsildar K. Muralidhar said six persons had died because of lightning in Mangalore taluk and Moodbidri so far. The State government had paid a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to each of the family of the victims under the National Calamity Fund. With regard to loss to agriculture crops, the government had paid Rs. 7,464 in Mangalore taluk, and Rs. 3,660 in Moodbidri. “The compensation is paid only in the case where the crop loss was in 50 cents or more area,” he said.

Mr. Muralidhar said three houses had been completely damaged while 141 houses had been partially damaged in Mangalore taluk. The government had paid compensation of about Rs. 3 lakh. Similarly, in Moodbidri taluk, there had been 30 cases of total and partial damage of house and compensation of Rs. 81,000 had been paid.

Mr. Muralidhar said to a large extent, the damage had been of electrical lines and connections, which, he said, could not be compensated. “We cannot pay for the damage to electrical lines and connections in houses,” he said. Mr. Jain said the taluk administration should place before the State government the need for steps to prevent damage because of lightning. The issue of erratic power supply was taken up.

MLA U.T. Khader took a Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited's executive to task for erratic power supply in the taluk. “There was repeated unscheduled power shutdown during this festival season. Why was no information given to people?” he said.

When the official said it was because of lightning, Mr. Khader said: “Then why was there power shutdown yesterday and day before yesterday. Was there any lightning?” he said. “I get calls when there is no power supply,” he said.

When Mr. Khader found that the official was too junior to answer him, Mr. Khader turned his attention to Executive Officer of Mangalore Taluk Panchayat Vishwanatha Poojary and sought to know as to why the Mescom Executive Engineer was not present in the meeting.

Mr. Jain said Mescom could not resort to unscheduled power shutdown under the guise of lightning.

Mr. Khader took objection to the new directive of the State government earmarking to Escoms 60 per cent of Rs. 8 lakh development fund given to gram panchayats. The remaining 40 per cent of the fund had been earmarked for payment of salaries of the panchayat officials.

“What development work can the panchyat up?” he said. When an official said the panchayats had to generate their income, Mr. Khader said “Where are the resources for panchayats to generate income?”

Bengaluru, Jan 24: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday said the much-delayed Cabinet expansion will take place in the next three days.

At the Kempegowda International Airport, after his arrival from Davos, he informed that he would discuss the matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take a final decision on the distribution of important portfolios.

Deputy CM Ashwanath Narayna, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and others received the Chief Minister at the airport. The issue of Cabinet expansion was kept in abeyance, ever since the spectacular victory of 12 Assembly seats for BJP, for which the by-elections were held recently. The bypolls were necessitated, following the resignation of about 17 sitting Congress and JD (S) MLAs, which resulted in the collapse of the JDS-Congress coalition government in the state.

BJP had reportedly lured the Congress and JD (S) MLAs into their camp, after promising them to give party ticket to contest the elections, as well as ministerial berths. The Chief Minister had kept as many as 16 Cabinet berths, along with plum portfolios, vacant, after forming the BJP government, with the support of the deserted Congress and JD (S) MLAs, in July last. However, the issue of Cabinet expansion had postponed on one reason or the other, as Yediyurappa was struggling to keep the promise he had made to the former Congress and the JDS MLAs, on whose sacrifice the BJP came back to power.

With the strong demand for ministerial berths within the loyal BJP MLAs, the BJP high command had reportedly advised Yediyurappa to accommodate only a few of the turncoat MLAs and strike balance between the groups.

However, Yediyurappa, who had assured the Congress and JD (S) MLAs of giving them Cabinet berths, had been in dilemma ever since and found it tough to convince the party's Central leaders.

According to party sources, the Chief Minister is not only facing problems over the expansion of his Cabinet, but is also worried over the demand for creation of more number of Deputy Chief Ministers, adding to the present list of three.

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Karantaka Congress chief DK Shivakumar on Friday raised questions over claims that Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project Madhya Pradesh was "largest in Asia" and said a 2000 MW had been built in the state.

"BJP central government is claiming today that it inaugurated Asia's largest solar plant of 750 MW at Rewa, MP. What then is the 2000 MW Solar Plant in Pavagada, Karnataka which was built in just 3 years by Karnataka Congress government and has been operational since 2018?" Shivakumar said in a tweet.

The Congress leader further said that the most unique thing about the solar project set up in Karnataka was that the farmers were being paid yearly rents for the land upon which it was constructed as it had been leased and not purchased from them, helping them retain ownership.

"The unique thing about the 2000 MW Pavagada Mega Solar Park was that not a single acre of land was acquired from the farmers. All 13,000 acres have been leased from the farmers who are being given yearly rent. Karnataka model of renewable energy was accepted as the best in India," he said.

"Union power minister must answer as to how the Central Government can claim that the Rewa Solar Park (750 MW) opened today is Asia's largest when clearly the Pavagada Park in Karnataka is much larger (2000 MW) and was opened two years back!" he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project to the nation on Friday.

Bengaluru, Feb 6: A 33 -year-old techie who was on the run after allegedly bludgeoning her mother to death and attempting to murder her brother at their house near KR Puram early on Sunday was arrested along with her friend from a hotel in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, on Wednesday morning.

C Amruta and Sridhar Rao were produced before a court in Port Blair to get a transit warrant, deputy commissioner of police (Whitefield) MN Anuchet said. Police initially thought she had committed the crime as she was unable to repay a loan of Rs 15 lakh and feared being humiliated by the lenders.

"But now we strongly suspect that Amruta and Rao were in a relationship, which was opposed by her mother and brother. We don't see any other reason for her to attack her family members. We can get more details only after questioning the duo," another police officer said, adding, "The most important question is: Did Rao know Amruta was going to kill her mother? Or he got to know about it only later? He'd booked their air tickets to Port Blair on January 31 itself."

Rao and Amruta worked together in a software company in Whitefield till 2017. "Then they joined different firms and were in constant touch," police said.

Preliminary probe revealed the duo flew to Port Blair by catching a flight from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) at 6.30am on Sunday. CCTV footage had shown Rao - wearing a full-face helmet and carrying a backpack - waiting near Amruta's house on a gearless scooter on Sunday morning. After she arrived, they chatted for a while before riding away. They arrived at KIA on the same bike, police said.

"We checked the passengers' list at KIA for that day and found Amruta's name. With the help of Port Blair police, we traced the duo to a hotel," an investigating officer said.

On Sunday morning, Amruta hit her 54-year-old mother C Nirmala on the head with a digging bar. She later stabbed her younger brother C Harish in the neck. Harish collapsed and thinking that he was dead, she left the house.

In his statement to police, Harish stated, "Around 4.30am, Amruta entered my room and stabbed me. I asked her what was wrong. She said she had a debt of Rs 15 lakh and didn't want the debtors to harass me and our mother."
