Minister shocked over worker's death in septic tank; hotel owner arrested

Mangalore, November 9: Social Welfare Minister Narayanaswamy on Tuesday expressed shock over the death of a worker, who died of suffocation after falling into a septic tank while cleaning the compound belonging to a hotel in Mulki.

The minister, who paid a visit to the spot on Tuesday, regretted that though manual cleaning of septic work (carrying nightsoil) has been banned in State, he termed the incident as unfortunate.

Stressing the need to create awareness against the system, he said that there are machineries to clean the septic tank and he would speak with the department concerned.

District-in-Charge Minister Krishna J?Palemar who accompanied the minister said that he would take steps to provide maximum compensation to Kitta's kin.

One of the persons who was working with Kitta said that though they started the work at noon, they had to continue the work till night when the incident occurred.The hotel owner was arrested on Monday and produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody.

The deceased is Kitta Koraga, a resident of Ullanje in Kateel. Though he fell on Sunday night, his body was removed only on Monday morning.

Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda, Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr K N Vijayprakash among others visited the spot and also met the family members of Kitta.

Meanwhile, Mulki police have arrested the owner of the hotel where a 45-year-old worker died of suffocation.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Puttamadaiah said Vincent Saldanha, owner of the Abhinandana Hotel in Kinnigoli, had been accused under Section 304 (A) (death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Prohibition of Manual Scavenging Act.

Mr. Saldanha had been remanded in judicial custody and he would be produced before the jurisdictional magistrate court on Wednesday, Mr. Puttamadaiah said.

Bengaluru, May 6: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday urged migrant workers to stay back as construction activities have resumed and also announced a Rs 1,610 crores COVID-19 financial package for the state.

The Chief Minister also said that close to one lakh persons, including migrant workers and students, among others, have so far been sent back to their home towns from Karnataka.

"We have sent around one lakh people in 3,500 buses and trains, back to their home towns. I have also appealed to migrant workers to stay as the construction work has resumed now," the Chief Minister said at a press conference on Wednesday.

"A package of Rs 1,610 crores will be released as COVID-19 financial relief. One time compensation of Rs 5,000 will be given to 2,30,000 barbers and 7,75,000 drivers," he added.

During the course of the press conference, the Chief Minister also announced compensation for floriculturists in the state.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao on Wednesday called a meeting of online, e-commerce food, medicine, groceries or animal products delivery aggregators at his office in wake of situation arising out of lockdown imposed in the entire country due to coronavirus epidemic.

The Police Commissioner has appealed one representative from each agency to join him in the meeting at 7 pm.

"I have called a meeting of online, e-commerce food, medicine, groceries, vegetables/fruits or animal products delivery aggregators today at 7 pm at my office at Infantry Road, Bengaluru," said Rao.

"One representative from each agency may please come. We promise all cooperation, please come," he said.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday confirmed 539 positive cases of coronavirus in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.

Mangaluru, Apr 19: In order to boost the Coast Guard's (CG) surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities on the country's west coast in Karnataka, CG OPV Varaha and CG Dornier 785 ex Kochi were pressed to service to undertake extensive surveillance.

"Both seawards and aerial surveillance of Karnataka coast line will be undertaken from Sunday," said S Babu Venkatesh, Commander, Coast Guard, Karnataka. The surveillance will be an air-sea coordinated operation.

The Coast Guard ships and aircraft maintained extensive search in the area for intercepting any suspect vessel. Indian Coast Guard ships classified various contacts in the area and kept them under constant surveillance.
