Bangalore, November 19: The Food and Civil Supplies Department will begin receiving online applications for new ration cards from Saturday. It has been a year since the department had stopped issuing new cards. At the same time, as many as 30 lakh bogus ration cards, both in urban and rural areas, have been identified.

The measures come as part of the streamlining of the public distribution system by the department. Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Friday, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Shobha Karandlaje said families in the urban areas, who do not possess ration cards, can submit their applications online through the website http://ahara.kar.nic.in or avail of “online service” at taluk office or offices of the jurisdictional assistant director or deputy director of the department by paying a fee of Rs 10.

Those in rural areas need to furnish information through the computers of their jurisdictional gram panchayat offices. Submission of applications for new ration cards can only be made online. Printed or handwritten applications will not be accepted, the minister said.

Families in possession of ration cards and who have submitted their electricity meter RR?number and their residential property tax number as sought by the department need not apply.

Consumers can also log on to the website to confirm whether they possess valid ration cards by keying in their card number, Karandlaje said.

Food and Civil Supplies Secretary B?A Harish Gowda said persons applying for ration cards have to furnish information about the place of residence and their family. He said submission of applications through the computer system will facilitate proper submission of data, processing and prompt delivery of ration cards. Once the application is submitted, the applicant will get an acknowledgement via e-mail or SMS. The jurisdictional food inspector will make a spot visit to verify the authenticity of the details provided following which the cards would be issued.

The department has not fixed any deadline to avail of new ration cards as the same is an ongoing process, the minister said.

Bogus cards

The department has also identified 12 lakh bogus ration cards in the urban areas (highest being in Bangalore at 3.23 lakh) and around 18 lakh bogus cards in rural pockets.

A few months ago, the department had launched a drive to weed out bogus cards by linking ration cards to electricity meter RR numbers of houses of beneficiaries in the urban areas and property tax numbers of houses in the rural areas.

Bengaluru, Jun 9: A 42-year-old founding director of an engineering consultancy firm lost Rs 65,000 to online fraudsters who posed as representatives of a mobile service provider and lured him with the offer of a fancy number recently.

Asif (name changed) received a text message on May 19, informing him that a platinum number, 9099999999, was available and interested people could dial a mobile number to avail it.

“Asif, who runs a mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) engineering consultancy near Shivajinagar, decided to get the fancy mobile number. He called the number and the receiver said they would generate an invoice for his request. After a fake invoice for Rs 64,900 was generated, Asif paid the money through online transaction that day. Asif waited for two weeks for the SIM card with the fancy number to reach him,” an officer said.

East CEN Crime police registered a case of cheating under section 420 of IPC and sections under the Information Technology Act after Asif lodged a complaint on June 6.

New Delhi, Feb 24: India has deeply appreciated the Senegal government's decision to extradite fugitive gangster Ravi Poojary to India, official sources said on Sunday.

Facilitation of transit provided by the Government of France has also been acknowledged, they said.

Ravi Prakash Poojary, accused of committing a number of serious offences including murder and extortion in multiple jurisdictions, was extradited from Senegal on Saturday.

The probe agencies have persistently pursued the case for his extradition with the authorities in Senegal. India had made a request with Senegal for his extradition in early 2019, sources said.

Poojary was associated with gangster Chhota Rajan, but he also worked for fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: The Karnataka government on Sunday directed the Director General of Police Praveen Sood to submit a detailed report on the internal security following the United Nations' observation that international terror outfit IS was active in the state.

The UN report stated that Al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent, which reportedly has between 150 and 200 members from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, was reportedly planning attacks in the region.

It also warned that there were 'significant numbers' of ISIS operatives in Karnataka and Kerala. Reacting to the UN report, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the state government has taken a serious note of the report on the activities of IS in the state.

The state government is in touch with the Centre and the neighbouring states to keep a close watch on the activities of suspicious people and their supporters.

"In this context, it has been decided to strengthen the internal security of the state. The Director General of Police has been asked to submit a detailed report," Bommai said in a release.

The state is also keeping a strict vigil on all those entering Bengaluru from other states, the Minister said. He recalled that the state police had arrested several members of Al-Hind organisation in January last and Jamaat- ul-Mujahideen from Bangladesh in 2018 and 2019. He added that the National Investigation Agency is investigating the case of JMB.
