Mangalore, November 19: The Lions club District 324-D5 organised a special event under the title “Folk fest amongst Lions, 2011” at Town Hall on Saturday.

District In-charge Minster Krishna J Palemar poured rice grain into a wooden container and inaugurated the function. Prior to this there was an invocation in the form of Yaksha dance.

In his inaugural address he said that Lions clubs are doing wonderful things as the concept is very socially centred. Indian culture is being forgotten fast and thus the club must organise more of such fests, he said.

In India we have so many cultures but everything is localised and hence people do not exchange aspects of their culture, he said.

This is also a good platform to take up sensitive issues like environmental awareness, he said.

Mr Palemar also commended the club's effort in having planting 100000 trees.

The objective of the fest was to encourage folk music and arts amongst the members of Lions club and also the general public.

The competitions were begun in the afternoon and many PU College students sang folk songs in groups. AIR announcer Shakuntala Kini, ameature poet Jayashree Aravind and Music artist Murlidhar Kamath were amongst the panel of judges. According to the organisers students from six colleges took part in the competitions.

Registrar of Mangalore University Dr Chinappa Gowda, Dharmadarshi Harikrishna Punaroor, President of District 324-D5 Dr Kishore Rao, General Manager of Corporation Bank B R Bhat and members of the Lions club Yogish Kumar Jeppu, Prasad Rai, Aravind Shenoy, Aravind Rao, K C Prabhu, J K Rao and Lion M B Sadashiv were also present.

Hassan, Feb 2: Former prime minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda has said that the controversy over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act should be resolved peacefully through discussion.

Speaking to reporters in Halebeed on Saturday, Gowda said that the Act affects only Muslims but would also prove troublesome for the Hindus. “Opening fire on anti-CAA protesters is the not solution to the issue,” he said.

Deve Gowda said that during his tenure as prime minister a number of problems concerning Muslims were addressed. “But, in the run up to election, Rahul Gandhi described us ‘B’ team of BJP. This led to vote swing,” he added. When his comment was sought on the budget, the former prime minister said that he had not yet read the budget document.

Davangere, Jul 19: A 9-year-old sniffer dog ran 12 km in the night to trace a murder accused and helped the police arrest him in Karnataka's Davangere rural area, an official said on Sunday.

"Doberman Pincher Tunga ran 12 km non-stop from the crime spot at Basavapattana in the city to a house at Kashipur in the rural where murder accused Chethan, 25, was hiding and helped us arrest him on July 17," Davangere Police Superintendent Hanumantha Rai said on phone.

Davangere is 260 km northwest of Bengaluru.

"Though Chethan allegedly shot dead his friend Chandra Nayak with a stolen service revolver on July 10 over sharing the booty (gold ornaments) of the theft they had committed recently with two others. We took female dog Tunga to the crime spot on July 16. She led the sleuths to the area where Chethan was hiding with two accomplices," Rai recalled.

While trained sniffer dogs normally run 4-5 km from a crime spot, Tunga could track the accused 12 km away.

When Tunga's handler (Head Constable Prakash) took her to the crime scene at 9.30 pm, she sniffed around and ran 12 km non-stop to Kashipur. She halted at a wine shop and went to a food joint later. Then she stopped at a house nearby at 12.30 am.

The prime accused (Chethan) was present in the house of his relative. He was arrested after he confessed to the theft and the murder.

The police are on the hunt to trace Chethan's two accomplices who fled from the house they were hiding in.

Karnataka Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Amar Kumar Pandey felicitated Tunga on July 17 at a function here for cracking the murder case with its exceptional sniffing traits.
