Chitradurga, December 6: Karnataka's top cop on Monday admitted that Mahadev S Mane, a police constable attached to the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF), was killed “accidentally” during a combing operation at a Naxal-infested village in Dakshina Kannada district on October 9.

The police had earlier claimed that Mane was killed by Naxals during the encounter at Naravi in Belthangady taluk.

But, doubts had been raised about the claim as Mane had sustained bullet injuries in his back.

Sources in the department had said Mane was killed by one of his companions accidentally, during an exchange of fire with a group of 10 suspected Naxals.

Speaking with mediapersons here on Monday, IG&DGP Shankar Bidari put en end to the speculation, stating that an internal inquiry report had confirmed that Mane was killed due to negligence and confusion among the ANF team which was scouring the area for Naxals.

Mane met his death during an alleged encounter between the ANF policemen and Naxals at Manjilakadu near Naravi, an area reportedly the focus of Naxal activity in Dakshina Kannada district.

Though it was initially believed that Mane was killed by the naxalites who were visiting the village, the circumstances of the death and conflicting versions of the incident fuelled doubts over the veracity of the police claims that Mane was a victim of firing by Naxals.

Reports that Mane was gunned down by his own colleagues due to the negligent, haphazard and unplanned combing technique of the ANF had begun gaining currency. Though credible sources in the police department had said that Mane's death was evidently due to wrong combat tactics, the police top brass remained tight-lipped throughout, and continued to point the finger at naxals.

According to the sources in the police, three persons — Surappa, Mohana and Harisha, all residents of Manjetti village of Belthangady taluk — had ventured into the forest for hunting. The locals mistook them for naxalites and called in the ANF. The ANF constables fired wildly in the forest during their search for alleged naxalites, resulting in Mane's death. The police department has not only remained silent so far, but has also failed to follow up its inquiry into the incident.

Mane is not the first victim of ANF friendly fire. In July 2007, Venkatesh, an assistant sub-inspector, had been killed in a similar incident. Mystery shrouds the incident till this day.

Bengaluru, Jan 30: The BJP government of Karnataka has given green signal to the proposal of hiking milk prices by Rs 2 per litre.

The new prices will come into effect from February 1. Seeking revision of prices, the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) had submitted a proposal last week to the state government. Alongside the revision of milk prices, the state government has also hiked the prices of curd by Rs 2 per liter.

The sudden hike in the prices of milk, curd is likely to have a cascading effect on the milk related beverages such as coffee, tea, and milkshakes with hoteliers and eateries mulling to increase the prices of coffee and tea following the hike in prices.

Sources in the state government revealed to DH that out of Rs 2, farmers will be getting a lion’s share as their accounts will be credited with Rs 1. Another 40 paise will be given to the farmers towards the insurances of their livestock.

Another 40 paise will go to the milk salesmen in the form of commission. The remaining 20 paise will be distributed among the workforce at the milk cooperative unions as an additional incentive.

Srinagar, Jan 14: Davinder Singh, deputy superintendent of police, who was arrested on Saturday along with two Hizb terrorists and a Hizb overground worker in Kulgam, has confessed to his interrogators that he had received Rs 12 lakh from the terrorists to ferry them to Jammu and then Chandigarh for their onward journey to New Delhi, IG (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar told the media here on Monday.

Intelligence sources said the terrorists planned to carry out attacks on Republic Day.

The DSP was suspended on Monday and is likely to be stripped of all his awards, including the President’s Police Medal for anti-militancy operations.

Davinder, who was interrogated by various intelligence agencies, including IB, military intelligence and RAW, besides the police, has disclosed that he had put up the terrorists at his Indira Nagar house in Srinagar, right next to the Army’s 15 Corps HQ, and thereafter accompanied them to Jammu in a Maruti car driven by the Hizb overground worker, intelligence sources claimed.

Meanwhile, sources said the Union home ministry may hand over the case to the NIA to find the real motive of the terrorists, Davinder’s links to terrorism and whether he had helped terrorists in the past as well.

The two Hizb terrorists arrested with Davinder are Naveed Babu alias Babar Azam, a resident of Nazneenpora in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, and his associate Rafi Ahmad Rather. The Hizb overground worker, identified as Irfan Shafi Mir, was driving the vehicle when it was intercepted by the police on Saturday. Irfan Shafi Mir has travelled to Pakistan five times on his passport.

Davinder, interestingly, was on duty ensuring security cover for the envoys of 15 countries who visited Srinagar at the Union government’s invitation last week.

There is 2 side for Terrorism, none have dare to attack or bombing unless there is hand from IB, Police and Intelligence (Also RSS support). Frequent bombings or terror attacks was stopped when Hemant Karkare emerged as true officer.

Mangaluru, Jun 3: A banner that read "Veer Savarkar Flyover Pumpwell" surfaced on the sidewall of the Pumpwell flyover in Mangaluru on Tuesday night.

It is suspected that activists of Bajrang Dal put up the controversial banner. Though it was removed later, it sparked debates on social media and photos of it went viral.

The development comes amid the controversy over the naming of a flyover at Yelahanka in Bengaluru after Savarkar.

A Hindutva ideologue, Savarkar has tendered apology to British imperialists and pledged to support them following his arrest during India’s freedom movement.
