Poornaprajna College arranges sky-watch, as moon turns a bloody red Saturday

Mangalore, December 8: One of the best sky events of this year is lunar eclipse on Saturday, December 10. Full moon passes deep into Earth Shadow.

This lunar Eclipse puts on a great show to us on that day. The total eclipse will be between 7.36 pm to 8.27 pm for 51 minutes.

The moon likely will take on an orange red-colour during totality as a small amount of sun light passes through earth atmosphere and scatters on to our only natural planet at totality.

Poornaprajna amateur astronomers club of Poornaprajna College has arranged a programme in collaboration with Sky Telescope Mumbai with their Telescope to watch this wonderful event on the top of MBA building of PPC, from 6 to 9 pm, on Saturday for the students and public.

Anyone can make use of this facility, said Dr. A.P. Bhat, Co-ordinator, Poornaprajna Amateur Astronomers Club, in a press release.

Mysuru, Mar 8: The 'Shuka Vana' (Parrots Museum), in the sprawling Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Ashrama here, will remain closed for 15 days from March 9 as a precautionary measure following COVID-19, Ashram authorities said here on Sunday.

Ashram authorities told UNI that the Museum will be closed due to threat of spread of Coronavirus. This is for the first time that the Museum has been closed for such a long time earlier it had closed for one or two days due to bird flu. The decision has been taken following the tourists and devotees including foreigners are arriving to Ashram in large numbers.

The ashram authorities have also closed famous The Kishkinda Moolika Bonsai garden on-premises for same reason.

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed. 

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: ‘Ride For Rotary’ convoy of motor vehicles will be flagged off from Hotel Ocean Pearl Inn at Bejai-Kapikad, Mangaluru on 19th January, 2020 at 8.30 a.m.

Mangaluru has been chosen as the starting point for the convoy route this year which will cover Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. 38 Rotarians from 14 countries are participating in 2019-20 Ride For Rotary, which is the fourth edition of the event. They will traverse through Madikeri, Mysore, Wayanad, Ooty, Coimbatore, Munnar, Thekkady and Allepey before terminating at Kochi on 29th of January, 2020.

2019-20 Ride For Rotary includes 28 motorbikes and 5 cars. The participating nationalities are India, Norway, Sweden, Canada, France, Germany, USA, UK, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Poland and Belgium. They belong to ages 21 to 78, with 78-year old Otto Rieve from Canada being the senior most enthusiast. Swiss national of Indian origin Raj Patholi and Mangalorean Abraham Zacharias are among the riders. Delegates who have already reached Mangalore visited Bantwal on Friday to attend a gala dinner hosted by the Rotary Club of Bantwal.

Ride for Rotary is a charity event conceived by Rotary District 3181 which comprises of the revenue districts of Mysore, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Chamarajanagar covering 85 Rotary Clubs in 9 zones. Rotarians from across the world will come together for twelve exhilarating days. They will traverse through the meticulously arranged routes, enjoy the natural beauty of the places and experience the varied cultures and cuisines of the region. Ride for Rotary connects people and places like no other - Rotary Connects the World.

The proceeds from the event go to The Rotary Foundation, a charitable organisation that works tirelessly for the upliftment of the society.
