Beary Sammelan' divides Academy members

Mangalore, December 10: The Beary Sammelan to be held on Saturday and Sunday by the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy has kicked up a debate with some members uncomfortable with a number of aspects about the Sammelan, starting with its title.

Rahim Uchil, a member of the academy, told The Hindu, that the Sammelan suggested a community rather than a language and that it should have been titled “Beary Sahitya Sammelan”.

Besides this, Mr. Uchil said that of the eight people being facilitated by the academy during Sammelan, only one person, Althaf Hussain (producer of the Beary film Byari) was an artist, while the rest were businessmen, professionals and persons who had rendered social service. On day two of the Sammelan, a discussion had been organized with three writers and presided over by another writer, none of whom speak Beary, Mr. Uchil said.

“There are numerous Beary writers who could have been invited for the session” Mr. Uchil said. Another member who requested anonymity felt that the Sammelan had the over stones of a community rather than a language. “Sahitya academies were meant for language, literature, and culture. But here, there is neither language nor literature” the member said referring to the title.

With regard to the writers invited for the discussion on the second day, the member said a number of writers such as Sara Abubacker, BM Hanif, Abdul Rasheed and the Bolwar brothers could have been invited.

"We can keep items like vegetables, currency notes, books or envelopes inside the chamber. Switching on the chamber for 15 minutes ensures 99.9 per cent destruction of microorganisms present in the surface of the items," Dr Isloor added.

Bengaluru, Jun 30: The judicial, non-judicial and administrative functions of the Karnataka High Court has been suspended for Tuesday, for sanitisation of the entire court complex due to "unavoidable circumstances".

The High Court in a notice informed about the decision on Monday.

"It is hereby notified to the litigant public/learned advocates/party-in-person/officers and staff of the High Court of Karnataka, Principal Bench, Bengaluru that, the judicial/non-judicial/administrative functions of the High Court is hereby suspended for one day -- on June 30, 2020, for sanitisation of entire High Court complex, due to unavoidable circumstances," the notice read.
