Canara School emerges overall champions of 'The Hindu' Young World Fest 2011

Mangalore, December 17: The Hindu Young World Fest 2011 was held at the Town Hall here on December 12 and 13 with Canara Higher Primary School, Urwa, Mangalore emerging as overall champions. The school bagged first place both in Indian Folk Dance and Indian Classical Dance.

The two days mega event was organised by The Hindu Newspaper, Mangalore in association with the Corporation Bank. Beary's Group were the associate sponsor.

The event was inaugurated by Dr N.S Channappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada District. Nasir Mohideen, Executive Director, Beary's Group was the guest of honour. The finals on Tuesday had competitions in Rangoli, Debate, Flower Arrangement, Cartooning and Classical, Folk and Western/Film Dances.

Prizes were given away by B N Sathish, General Manager, Corporation Bank. G R Venkatesh, Regional General Manager and Sheshagiri K G, Asst. Regional General Manager of The Hindu, Mangalore were present on the ocassion.

Over 800 children of 78 schools from Udupi, Chikmagalur and Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts participated on the final day.

Results

Overall champions Canara Higher Primary School, Urwa, Mangalore.

Classical Dance: Shwetha & team, Canara Higher Primary School, Urwa (winners); Apoorva & team, Sharada Vidyalaya, (first runners up) and Vanishree & team, Canara (CBSE) School, Mangalore (second runners up).

Indian Folk Dance: Deeksha & team, Canara Higher Primary School, Urwa (winners); Supritha & team, JEM English Medium High School, Kalasa (first runners up), and Harshavardhan & team, Sainik School, Kodagu (second runners up).

Western/Filmi Dance: Reon & team, St Agnes Girls High School (winners), Vrunitha & team, Sharada Vidyalaya (first runners up) and Neemraj & team, Kerala Samajam English Medium School (second runners up).

Flower arrangement: Lynn & Team, St Agnes Girls High School (winners), Vishal & Team, St Aloysius High School, Kodialbail (first runners up) and Havyas & Team, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Madikeri (second runners up).

Mangaluru, Feb 2: A video of a woman rescuing a dog from a well in Mangaluru has gone viral on social media. The dog fell inside the well accidentally and the woman rushed to the spot to rescue it. The two minute seven second video has been shared on Twitter by a user, Mauna, and has ever since been viewed over 15,000 times.

The woman climbed down the well as other people attached a rope to her body during the rescue mission. Another rope was then thrown to her and she tied it around the dog after which it was pulled outside. The woman, thereafter, climbed outside the well with much difficulty.

"Bless the lady who saved the Dog," the user captioned the post.

Bengaluru, Jun 10: The Karnataka Anti-Corruption Bureau on Wednesday conducted raids at 14 places linked to four government officials in the state.

On receiving received credible information about the officials amassing disproportionate assets, an illegal assets case was registered and raids are being conducted at 14 places linked to them, ACB said in a release.

It said the raids are still on and investigation is being carried out about their assets.

Raids are being conducted on properties linked to L Sathish Kumar, Additional Commissioner, Department of Commercial Tax; N Ramakrishna, Divisional Forest Officer, Srinivasapura, Kolar; Gopalshetty Mallikarjuna, Executive Engineer, District Development Cell, Raichur; Raghappa Lalappa Lamani, Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Ltd official in Almatti, Bagalkote, the release said.

Bengaluru, Jan 17: Six persons, said to be supporters of Social Democratic Party of India, have been arrested in connection alleged attempt to murder a member of RSS in Bengaluru.

Varun Bhopala (34), a resident of Sarakki in JP Nagar, was attacked while he was on his way to his father's shop near JC Road after attending a pro-CAA event organised by the RSS and other Hindutva organisations on December 22, 2019.

Police commissioner Bhaskar Rao said the arrested are Irfan alias Mohammed Irfan (33), Syed Akbar alias Mechanic Akbar (46), Syed Siddiq Akbar (30), Akbar Basha (27), Sanaulla Sharif (28) and Sadiq UL Ameen (39) - all residents of KG Halli in East and North Bengaluru.

Rao said the arrested wanted to attack and kill the leaders who took part in the pro-CAA event. They initially pelted seven stones to scatter the crowd so that they can attack the leaders, but they failed. Later, they saw Varun walking out of the crowd wearing a saffron shirt. So the arrested followed him and attacked him with lethal weapons. Assuming he is dead, the gang fled on their bikes towards Bidadi.

''The SDPI activists were funded by their leaders to create a disturbance, kill Hindu organisation leaders,'' Rao said. "I have formed a special team to investigate in-depth about the SDPI activities and take necessary action,'' he added.
