Doctor, nurse suspended over patient's death; compensation sought

Kasargod, December 24: A doctor and a nurse at the General Hospital here were on Friday suspended from service in connection with the death of a patient shortly after he was administered penicillin injection at the hospital.

The suspension of the doctor, Sushil, and the nurse, Remya, was ordered by Deputy District Medical Officer Vimalraj for alleged dereliction of duty while treating the man, who was suffering from rheumatic heart disease, official sources here said.

The development comes following a group of Samastha Kerala Sunni Students Federation members took out a protest march to the hospital premises. The protesters were blocked by the police, who arrested them.

Mohammed Sharif, 38, a resident of Beejanda in Badiyaduka village had reached the hospital along with his brother on Thursday. He died around 2.30 p.m. shortly after taking the injection.

Sharif, a casual worker, used to have pencome-12 injection. His relatives accused the doctor of administering the medicine without giving a test dose.

Hospital authorities contended that Sharif developed breathing difficulties as he was given the test dose and died despite being given oxygen while administering the injection.

The death of the patient created commotion at the hospital and the police were deployed to defuse the situation.

The body was taken to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital and then to the forensic laboratory in Kozhikode for a detailed examination.

Kasaragod MLA N A Nellikkunnu demanded an investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Sharif.

He urged the government to announce compensation to the family of the deceased. He said he had taken up the matter with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Health Minister Adoor Prakash.

Bengaluru, Aug 9: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has expressed condolences over the death of nodal officer who died while being on COVID-19 duty and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakhs to the family of the deceased.

The deceased has been identified as H Gangadharaiah. As per reports, he died due to a heart attack while on COVID-19 duty.

A government job and Rs 25 lakhs will be provided to the officer's family, according to Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

"Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa expressed his heartfelt condolences over the death of H Gangadharaiah, KAS, who was on COVID-19 duty as nodal officer at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC)," Karnataka CMO tweeted.

"CM announced Rs 25 lakhs ex-gratia from Chief Minister's Relief Fund, a government job for a family member and instructed the last rites of Gangadharaiah to be performed with full state honours," the CMO added.

In the last 24 hours, 7,178 new COVID-19 cases (including 2665 in Bengaluru Urban), 93 deaths and 5,006 discharged cases were reported in Karnataka.

The total number of cases rises to 1,72,102 in the state, including 79,765 active cases, 89,238 discharges and 3,091 deaths, as per the State's Health Department.

Shivamogga, Jan 11: Members of Karnataka Congress women's wing staged a protest in Shivamogga on Friday against the rise in onion prices and domestic LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders.

As a mark of protest, the demonstrators wore garlands made of onions, drew rangoli on the road and cooked food with firewood. The protestors also carried posters comparing the price of cylinders in Congress and BJP-led government in the Centre.

The price of non-subsidised LPG was hiked by Rs 19 per cylinder from January 1, 2020.

Mangaluru, Jun 3: Mangaluru MLA and former minister U T Khader has urged the state government and Dakshina Kannada district administration to take steps to facilitate the return of Indians stranded in foreign countries amid covid lockdown.

A delegation comprising Mr Khader, DCC President K Harish Kumar, and MLC Ivan D’Souza met District In-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary and submitted a memorandum on Tuesday.

“Kannadigas who are working outside the state are in distress due to the lockdown. More than 50,000 people had uploaded applications on Seva Sindhu portal seeking permission to return to their villagers and are waiting for permission. With the authorities failing to take any decision, they are worried,” said the delegation.

The government should initiate measures to get them back and quarantine them, urged the delegation.

Mr Khader said, “Many workers stranded in foreign countries are eager to return home. The district administration should make arrangements to quarantine those returning from foreign countries and other states.

There are thousands of migrant labourers from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar stranded in DK. They are waiting to return to their families. The state government should facilitate their return journey, the delegation urged.

MLC Ivan D’Souza said, “Assistance should be provided to private bus staff, beedi workers, tailors, garage labourers and street vendors who are in distress. The price of Covid-19 tests in private laboratories should be reduced.”

The delegation informed that after Wenlock Hospital was converted into the designated COVID-19 hospital, poor patients are facing many inconveniences. A portion of the hospital should be earmarked for treating other patients, they said.
