Abbakka Utsava should strengthen communal harmony: UT Khader

Mangalore, December 28: Mangalore MLA U T Khader has said that upcoming 'Abbakka Utsava' should be an inspiration for the people of coastal Karnataka to strengthen the spirit of freedom and harmony in the society.

Mr Khader, who is the honorary president of the celebration committee of 'Veera Rani Abbakka Utsava-2012' was speaking at a preparatory meet organised at Click Marriage Hall at Thokkottu here on Tuesday.

“Abbakka Utsava is the celebration of pride of Kannada land and people of all caste, creed and religion must celebrate it together. The Utsava should be utilised to establish the communal harmony in this part of the state”, he said.

The reception committee president of Abbakka Utsava Samiti, former MLA K Jayaram Shetty gave the introductory speech. Secretary Dinakar Ullal in his speech gave information about previous festivals and sought the co-operation of everyone for the forthcoming festival.

General Secretary Bhaskar Rai Kukkuvalli explained the features of the festival and also about the Abbakka awards. K Tharanath Rai and Dhanalaxmi introduced the sports and cultural competitions of the fest.

Condolence Meet

The Abbakka Utsav Samiti paid homage to former Karnataka chief minister S Bangarappa, who died on Sunday by organising a condolence meet. The Samiti also condoled the demise of DK Zilla Panchayat former president Santhosh Kumar Bhandary and Karnataka Tulu Sahitya academy former member M Anand Shetty.

Members of the Samithi Sadananda Bangera, R K Ullal, Abdul Aziz Hak, U P Aliyabba, Smt Suvasini, Padmavathi,Rathnavathi Baikady, Mallika S,Devaki R Ullal, Vijayalaxmi Shetty and others were present.

Udupi, Jun 27: The Indian Meteorological Department and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre have sounded Orange alert in coastal Karnataka as there is all possibility of heavy rain lashing the region for the next three days from Saturday.

According to the forecast, the district may get 100 mm to 115 mm rainfall. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has given instructions on taking precautions in the district.

All officers of district and taluk-levels have been told to compulsorily remain in the central position. The citizens should take care not to venture into rivers or the sea. They should also stay away from electricity poles, buildings, and trees, which might prove dangerous, and take shelter in safer places.

Mangaluru, June 5: A local businessman was hacked to death while two of his relatives suffered critical injuries in a broad daylight attack by a group of miscreants at Mulki on the outskirts of the city today.

The victim has been identified as Abdul Lateef (38). He was proprieter of Align Gold, Moodbidri. His wife is an advocate in Moodbidri. 

Abdul Lateef's father-in-law Muneer and latter's son Hayat suffered stab injuries. They are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru. 

The attack took place near the Vijaya Bank in Mulki. 

According to sources, a gang of miscreants stabbed all three. While Abudl Lateef succumbed to his injuries, the other two are responding to the treatment. 

Police have registered a case. Investigations are on.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 9: Kerala has sanctioned the setting up of 28 fast track courts for speedy trial in rape cases and other cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

State Social Justice and Women and Child Development Minister KK Shailaja said the state government has decided to set up POCSO courts to ensure that the culprits get the punishment they deserve. She said the decision has been taken in the wake of rising violence against women and children.

"The Union Law Ministry has recently sanctioned the opening of 28 POCSO fast track special courts in Kerala at the request of the state government. The project will be implemented jointly by the High Court, Law and Home Departments under the leadership of the Department of Women and Child Development," the Minister said.

The four courts are alloted in Thiruvananthapuram district, three in Thrissur and Malappuram districts, two each in Kollam, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Kannur districts.

The Minister informed that POCSO courts are jointly established by the central and state governments and according to the High Court data, 12,234 POCSO and rape cases are pending in the state.
