Burqa showroom asked to pay compensation to aggrieved customer

Mangalore, December 28: The Dakshina Kannada District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has asked a burqa showroom in the city to pay a compensation of Rs 6,000 including litigation costs, to a customer for replacing a costly burqu material given for stitching with a substandard one.

Ayisha Gulzar (23) of Someshwar, Ullal, had lodged a complaint against the Paradise Burqa House located at Kunil Centre in the city, alleging if of deceiving her.

She had handed over the material gifted by her brother, to the burqa house for stitching in October 2010. The burqa house had promised to deliver the stitched burqa on November4. When she returned to the showroom-cum-stitching centre, the burqa was not ready. She was asked to collect it on November 15. On the following say, Aysha received the burqa from the showroom to discover that the material was different.

Refusing to accept the delivery, she insisted that she wanted the imported material handed over by her. However, the showroom insisted that there had been mix-up with the materials and she had to collect the burqa stitched from sub-standard material.

The aggrieved customer had then approached the Forum demanding a compensation of Rs 16, 000.

Countering her charges, the Paradise Burkha House claimed that Aysha had failed to collect the stitched burqa on the due date. She had visited the showroom on November 15 to collect the stitched burqa, but left on the pretext of not having sufficient money to pay for the burqa and never turned up. The Paradise Burkha House deposing before the Forum sought the dismissal of case as there was no mix-up of materials and the burqa was stitched to specific requirements with the material given by the complainant.

However, on scrutiny of evidences, the Forum observed that a sample of the material tagged with receipt differed with the stitched material submitted before the Forum.

The material attached to slip was thicker than the stitched material displayed by the showroom, the Forum stressed and dismissed arguments that the burqa was not stitched from the material given by Aysha.

Forum President Asha Shetty also stressed that it was the bounden duty to take care of the materials given by customers.

Taking into the cost of material and the inconvenience caused, The Forum directed the Paradise Burqa House to pay a compensation of Rs 6, 000 including litigation expenses within a month.

Addressing a Joint Legislative meeting here, he said that the proposed Ultra Mega Renewable Energy parks would come up at Koppala, Bidar and Gadaga in the state.

Bengaluru, Apr 21: Alarmed by reports that 53 media persons have contracted coronavirus in Maharashtra, a Minister on Tuesday urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to screen all the journalists in Karnataka.

During the regular Covid-19 related briefing on Monday, a reporter had raised the issue of 53 journalists in the neighbouring state testing positive for the disease, with Minister for Primary and Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar.

In Maharashtra, out of the 171 scribes examined medically, 53 were found to have the viral infection.

In his letter to the CM, Kumar said a similar test should be carried on the journalists in Karnataka.

"The journalists wanted a similar kind of screening to be carried out on them. Therefore, please direct the health and the information department immediately to conduct the screening of journalists who are in contact with public," Kumar said.

Dubai, May 12: Free tickets are being offered by philanthropists and businessmen based in the UAE for deserving Indians who want to fly home.

Repatriation ticket prices have been set at around Dh700 to Dh750 per person depending on the destination. But there are many in UAE who cannot afford it, especially people who have lost their jobs or have medical concerns.

Malayalam Communications Ltd and its Malayalam stations (Kairali TV & Kairali News) are giving away 1,000 tickets free. Those who wish to apply can submit their application to [email protected].

Indian businessman Dhananjay Datar, chairman & managing director of Al Adil Trading Company, is also giving away 300 tickets. He is liasing with the Consulate General of India (CGI) for the names. “This is the time we need to rise as a community,” he said.

Besides taking care of airfares, Datar will also bear the cost of COVID-19 testing fees for Indians from the UAE.

“The repatriation efforts undertaken by the government of India is one of the largest initiatives. I am just doing a small bit to help the community. There are many people who are not in a position to meet the airfare and COVID testing costs as they have lost jobs. I will be coordinating with authorised entities handing this to lend my support,” he said.

Pravasi India Forum, a welfare organisation in UAE, is giving away 100 tickets. The NGO on Monday, May 11, uploaded a registration form where people can provide their details. “Tickets will be given to those approved by CGI and for those who are in financial distress,” said Abulaise, president of Pravasi Welfare Forum.

Punnakan Mohammed Ali, general secretary Incas UAE committee, said it is also ready to give away hundreds of free tickets but only to genuine candidates. “We will evaluate each individual and only if they are approved by the consulate, we will give the tickets. But we are ready to help.”

Need for more flights

The gesture notwithstanding, many Indians are still waiting to get news on their repatration.

Social worker Shukoorali Kallangal, President, Abu Dhabi Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC), urged the government of India to add more flights to accommodate more passengers.

“Emergency repatriation services are the need of the hour. There are several expats with medical, financial distress. For those who came with the hope of a job – that too is a thing of the past now. Right now all they want is to go home and start something afresh there.”

Kallangal said: “Take the case of pregnant women. In many cases, their husbands have lost jobs or have been asked to go on unpaid leave. They are living hand to mouth and cannot afford medical costs. Due consideration should be given to them.”

Sreedharan Prasad, another social worker based in Ras Al Khaimah, said he is currently dealing with several emergency medical cases.

Consul General of India Vipul said plans are afoot to add more flights in the next phase of Indian repatriation. “The number of flights are being decided by India in consultation with state governments. This is not a normal situation we all are in. We are in the middle of a pandemic situation.”
