Moodbidri, January 3: Well-known Hindustani singer Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty will be conferred with Alva's Virasat award on the inaugural day of the national cultural fest to be held from January 5 to January 8 at Shobhavana, Mijar near Moodbidri.
The award will be given away by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda after inaugurating the event. The award will carry a cash prize of Rs one lakh, citation and traditional honour, said a press release.
Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggede will preside over the inaugural session.
Pandit Ajoy Chaktaborty is regarded as one of the renowned classical singer of the Patiala Gharana. He has also received Kumar Gandharva award.
In 1990, Ajoy was honored with the President's Award. No other classical vocalist of India has won this award for being the 'Best Male Playback Singer' before him.
He was one of the artistes who were invited by the Pakistan government to perform in Pakistan. He had also won gold medal from Sangeet Research Academy of Kolkata. He runs a music school named Shruthinandan in Kolkatta. He was conferred Padmashree in 2011.
