Family eager to embrace released hostage

Kasargod, January 14: Family members of a local sailor from Kasargod, who was released by Somali pirates on Thursday after five months of captivity, are eagerly waiting for his safe return.

53-year-old-Muhammad Nangi, a resident of Doddanangi, Mogral, near Kumble, was among about 21 members of the crew held hostage by Somali pirates near the Salalah coast off southern Sultanate of Oman on Saturday, August 20.

“Allah has answered our prayers. We are eager to see her face”, said Zuhra, wife of Nangi.

The Somali pirates had boarded the ship, 'MV Firechem Bogey', and hijacked while anchored in Salalah port in Oman. A Salalah-based shipping source said the vessel was being loaded with methanol when it was seized.

The 21 captives have been released after the pirates were paid $ 8 million in ransom. The other Keralite held hostage has been identified as K Rohit (26) from Thalikkulam in Thrissur was also released. Rohit was working on the ship as an electrician for two years.

Hosapete, Jan 6: Tension prevailed at Chalavadikeri here on Monday as residents prevented BJP leaders and workers from entering the locality for propaganda on Citizenship (Amendment) Act and shouted slogans against them.

On receipt of the information about the arrival of the BJP leaders, the residents of the locality gathered at the entrance of the lane and displayed black flag besides shouting slogan-go back, go back.

The people told the BJP workers not enter their vicinity when the workers stated them that they will distribute pamphlets only.

The police who arrived at the spot are trying their best to pacify the irate locals. More number of people belonging to Muslim and Dalit communities are residing in the area.

Newsroom, Apr 23: During the ongoing lockdown in India so as to break the chain of Coronavirus infection, Islamic scholars across India are appealing Muslims to stay indoors and observe fasting with steadfastedness in the blessed month of Ramadan.

They have urged the people to offer taraveeh and other Namaz at homes, do iftar at home and enjoy with one's family only.

During Ramadan, social distancing would be of utmost importance in order to contain the disease, they urged. 

Shahi imams of Jama Masjid and Fatehpuri Masjid in the city have also appealed to Muslims to offer namaz during the holy month of Ramadan at home and follow lockdown guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Bengaluru, May 11: Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar today held a video conference with Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja to discuss measures to tackle COVID-19.

The ministers discussed in detail the protocols for testing, quarantine and treatment for COVID-19 that are being followed by both the states.

The Karnataka Health Department on Monday said that 10 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the state, taking the total number of positive cases to 858.

"31 people have lost their lives due to coronavirus in the state and 422 persons have been discharged after recovery," the Health Department added.

Kerala, on the other hand, has tackled the coronavirus crisis better than most other states of the country. There are only 19 active cases of COVID-19 in the state while 489 people have recovered. The death toll in the state is 4, according to the data published by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.
