Mangalore, January 21: The skies on Saturday afternoon literally flirted with the eyes of thousands of people who thronged Panambur beach, as the two-day international kite festival got off to a flying start.

The kite flyers from various parts of the nation and seven foreign nations like United Kingdom, France, Lebanon, Kuwait, Holland, Lebanon and Indonesia, were seen busy flying various types of kites.

The inaugural function was conducted in a different fashion as all the participating countries came together near the stage. The chief guest of the event was Seemanth Kumar Singh, Commissioner of Police, Mangalore City. After a brief photo session and invocation the Commisioner was guided to a central stage. Along with the organizers led by chief organizer Giridhar Kamath, Seemanth Kumar Singh flew a special kite dedicated to the Police Commissionerate.

Expressing his joy Mr Singh said, “This festival is a symbol of peace and Mangalore City must benefit out of it in terms of tourism. I hope the numbers will increase next year and the foreigners have been kind enough to participate in this unique event. I am grateful to the organizers for having made a kite in the name of our department.” Also present on this occasion was ACP Puttamadhayya. As a symbol of respect a 1 minute silence was observed in memory of the labourers who died at the MRPL blast.

The foreign participants were more than delighted to fly their kites. The French couple of Marco and Saundarine showcased a Revolution kite. Marco said, “We have been to other festivals as well like Ahmedabad and Mumbai, but this one is very well organised. This place is nice for a festival.”

Another participating country Lebanon had two flyers come in. Rami Ilaha said, “We have been to Ahmedabad, Belgaum and the skeleton of our kite is made from carbon graphite and hence it is light in weight. Our kite is in the shape of a duck and it is our favourite hobby.”

Another interesting team was the one from Kuwait: Tariq and Mohammed Salem. Both had very interesting facts about their kites. They said, “Our kite is already in the Guinness book of world records and our kite is the symbol of our national flag. Its strings weigh around 100 kg and it needs three tractors to fly it. We also have another kite called the Monta-Ray which is bigger than this one, but it is unofficial and still not entered the record books.”

Local hit Team Mangalore also had its kite flying high with pride. This team already has been to eight countries till now.

Mr Giridhar Kamath said that they have sponsored some of the foreign teams and they have enjoyed the hospitality of Team Mangalore.

A major attraction was the techno savvy Prithiviraj, an assistant professor at NITK, Surahtkal who had fixed his indigenously built remote controlled camera attached to a kite which showed the ground below on a screen in his hand.

Kochi, Feb 29: The Kerala Non-Resident Indians' Commission on Friday passed a resolution to request the Centre and Election Commission (EC) to make appropriate amendments in the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951, to ensure voting rights to the non-resident Indians working abroad. According to People’s Representation Act, 1951, None-Resident Indians (NRIs) can vote by proxy.

The Commission is a statutory body constituted for the welfare of Non-Resident Keralites working outside India.

The Centre had introduced a bill for this purpose which was passed by the Lok Sabha in 2018, but the same has since lapsed.

Therefore, the Kerala NRI Commission decided to request the Centre to consider introducing the bill in the next session of Parliament considering the interest of the NRI community at large.

The resolution was moved by commission member and NRI entrepreneur Shamsheer Vayalil, who is also a petitioner in the writ petition, filed regarding this in the Supreme Court.

"The central government may consider introducing the bill in the next session of the Parliament session considering the interest of the NRI community at large," read the resolution which will now be sent to the Ministry of Law and the Election Commission (EC).

Commission chairman Justice PD Rajan said the right to vote for NRIs is a genuine demand.

"This is the time that we step up pressure on the agencies concerned to implement this. Voting from the workplace would be a different experience for them. It would be a decisive step," he said.

This fresh development comes at a time when a petition filed in the Supreme Court on the same topic last week came before a bench headed by Justice Deepak Gupta, which considered the case and said it will be heard in April.

"We are expecting a favourable decision from the Supreme Court. We would also approach the NRI commission in other states and request them to raise the same demand," said Vayalil.

If implemented, millions of NRIs around the world would be able to exercise their franchise in the electoral processes of the nation. According to the estimate of the Ministry of External Affairs, there are about 3.10 crore NRIs.

Bengaluru, Mar 11: The Insurance Regulatory Authority of India has asked insurers to settle all claims related to coronavirus expeditiously under existing health policies that provide for treatment of hospitalisation expenses.

It has also asked insurers to design products covering the cost of treatment of coronavirus that has fast spread across the world and also resulted in increasing number of infections in India. There has been over 3,000 deaths globally and 58 cases tested positive in India.

In order to provide need-based health insurance coverage, insurers are intro ducing products for various specific diseases, including vector borne diseases. "For the purpose of meeting health insurance requirements of various sections, insurers are advised to design products covering the costs of treatment for coronavirus," the IRDAI said in a circular.

The regulator said that under existing health insurance policies where hospitalisation is covered, not only the cases related to coronvirus disease (COVID-19) shall be expeditiously handled, but all the costs of admissible medic al expenses during the course of treatment, including the treatment during quarantine period, should be settled in accordance to the applicable terms and conditions of policy contract and the extant regulatory framework.

This would bring much needed relief to policy holders some of whom were facing difficulty in getting coverage for treatment takers to coronavirus. In the absence of clear information, a few hospitals were reportedly denying for forward such claims of policy holders to the insurers.

IRDAI has now said that all the claims reported under COVID-19 shall be thoro ughly reviewed by review committee before repudiating the claims. This would prevent blanket rejection of such claims.

But to get full claim for treatment of coronavirus, industry experts said, a person should be hospitalised at least for 24 hours. Most insurers do not c over outpatient treatment.

Bengaluru, Feb 12: Mohammed Nalapad, the rogue son of Karnataka Congress leader NA Harris, who is out on bail in a 2018 case of him bashing up a man at a pub, has now rammed his luxury car into vehicles, injuring four people on Bengaluru road.

The incident took place on Sunday on the Ballari Road where Nalapad was rash driving his car. The car hit a biker and an autorickshaw, injuring four people. He immediately got off his car and fled riding a friend's car.

The biker has suffered a fracture in his leg and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to police, soon after the accident a man appeared before police to claim responsibility for the accident.

Ravikante Gowde, Joint Commissioner of Police said, "A man named Balakrishna came to surrender as the one who was driving the car. Investigation has, however, showed that it was Nalapad who was driving when he met with the accident. The investigating officer has issued him a notice to appear before the police."

BJP spokesperson S Prakash has said, "A case under the Goonda Act should be filed against Nalapad and the court should take cognisance of this and cancel his bail. The father has no control over son. He is a serial offender who is harming the public on a repeated basis."

Nalapad was earlier arrested in 2018 in the Bengaluru pub incident in which he and his associate bashed up the son of a prominent businessman in the city. Nalapad Harris is out on bail after remaining in judicial custody for three months in the case of attempt to murder after the 2018 midnight brawl.
