Anti-filaria medication begins

Mangalore, January 23: Mass drug administration programme organized by the Department of Health and Family Welfare for prevention and control of filariasis was symbolically inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner N S Channappa Gowda at Government Wenlock Hospital here on Monday

More than 100 people took tablets at the inaugural function. Sumathi and Sangeetha, nurses at the Government Wenlock Hospital distributed the drugs to the gathering. They informed that each children aged between two years to five years should consume one Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) tablet and one Albendazole tablet, while persons aged between six years and 14 years should consume two DEC tablets and one albendazole tablet. And persons aged above 15 years should consume three DEC tablets and one albendazole tablet at a time and people aged above 70 years are not supposed to take this tablet.

They said that this dosage prevents a person from filariasis for lifetime and if the person is already affected, the consumption of the tablet, would help him recover depending upon his resistance.

Senior Malaria Inspector P Jayaram Poojary said that tablets will be distributed in Mangalore, Puttur and Bantwal taluks of Dakshina Kannada district, under the supervisor of nodal officers. He said each drug distributer covers 50 houses in the location and cover all the houses within three days from today.

Director of Health and Family Welfare services, Bangalore Dr. Cheluvaraj, Joint Director, National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) Dr. Nagaraj, Health and Family Welfare officer O R Srirangappa, District Surgeon, Government Wenlock Hospital GM Sangameshwar, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr B Saroja, District Vector Borne Disease Control (VBDC) officer Dr. Arun Kumar, District Health Supervisor (Malaria) Subrahmanya Holla among others were present on the occasion.

The deceased was running a hotel named Hotel Samtappa here.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: The spread of COVID-19 in the country has been contained through the prompt, effective and timely measures taken by the Centre, BJP Karnataka president and Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said on Sunday.
 
The Centre brought in stringent regulations including the lockdown at the right time and ensured that the pandemic did not spread rapidly, he told reporters here.
 
Kateel inspected the railway coaches which have been converted into isolation wards for infected patients at the central railway station here.
 
He said 20 out of the 32 railway coaches re-designed into wards by Southern Railway's Palakkad division, will be stationed here.
 
The wards are equipped with necessary medical equipment and facilities for doctors and paramedical staff.
 
Kateel said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown how such difficult situations need to be handled.
 
The lockdown was announced in time so that coronavirus spread was checked and all the central departments carried out their works efficiently to monitor the situation, he said.
 
Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath was also present.

Bengaluru, May 30: Bengaluru City civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on the food delivery startup Swiggy for irresponsible disposal of waste, an official said on Friday.

"Thinking of food is great - Swiggy. Hope you also think of segregating waste and disposing of it responsibly," tweeted BBMP Solid Waste Management Special Commissioner D. Randeep.

Randeep said a penalty of Rs 50,000 was imposed on Swiggy Kitchen at Katriguppe in the city for the violation.

"The incident with respect to waste segregation has been brought to our notice and happened at one of our kitchens in Bengaluru," confirmed a Swiggy spokesperson to IANS without revealing the exact details.

He said the startup is aware of its civic responsibility and has stringent processes to ensure high standards of compliance.

"While we investigate and rectify the root cause of the matter, we are reinforcing necessary awareness on the best practices to be followed amongst our teams and partner network to ensure complete compliance with waste management," the spokesperson added.

Swiggy has been penalised earlier as well for its irresponsible disposal of waste.

Recently, the BBMP’s solid waste management department has also fined an apartment complex Rs 15,000 for not segregating waste into dry, wet and reject categories.

Waste disposal norms for apartments

"Segregation of waste is mandatory in apartments. Onus of enforcing segregation rules lies on the (apartment) association and waste should be segregated as dry, wet and reject," said Randeep.

InClover Grand Apartments at Baiyappanhalli was penalised for the offence of improper waste disposal. Similarly, BBMP marshals also caught and fined some people openly discarding waste in public spaces.

"Dear citizens, please change your old habits. Our marshals are watching and will fine those who throw garbage in public spaces," BBMP Special Commissioner Randeep said.

He shared the photographs of two scooter-borne individuals being caught in the act and penalised at Kuvempunagar in Bengaluru.
