R-Day protest against casteist tradition; Thousands attempt to gherao Krishna Temple

Udupi, January 26: People in Srikrishna Temple, through the caste based discrimination while serving mass meal have been trying prove that they were above the Constitution, said State Secretary of CPI (M) Srirama Reddy.

He was addressing the agitators here on Thursday, at a protest organized by Karnataka state unit of CPI (M), to launch its statewide protest against 'Pankthi-bedha' in 250 temples of the state, including Sri Krishna Temple, Udupi.

Over 3,000 members of communist party of India (Marxist) from Udupi, DK, Koppala, Raichore, Bellary, Shimoga, Chikmagalore and Uttara Kannada districts participated in the protest. They made an attempt to march towards the Car Street of Srikrishna temple by pushing the barricades put along the Sanskrit College circle and courted arrest.

Reddy said that Indian Constitution, accepted exactly 63 years ago propagates against social inequality, untouchability and caste based discrimination. Inspite of that this discriminatory act is being practiced in Srikrishna Temple. “People in Srikrishna Mutt are anti-constitutional”, he alleged.

He challenged the Pejawar Pontiff Vishwesha Theertha to stop merely making media statements against Pankthibedha and to eliminate the system if he really felt it was inhuman.

Members of the CPI (M) State Secretariat GN Nagaraj, Nithyanand Swamy, CPI (M) Dakshina Kannada secretary B. Madhava, its Udupi district Secretary K. Shankar, comrades KR Sriyan, Prasanna Kumar, Neela and others participated in the protest.

Mangaluru, Mar 25 : Taking into account surge of COVID-19  cases in neighbouring districts, Dakshina Kannada district administration has decided to suspend retail sales at Central Market in Mangaluru and public will not be allowed to purchase at Central Market from Thursday.

Proper arrangements have been made for the public to buy from nearby grocery shops from 6 am till 12 noon. 
However strict social distancing has to be ensured by the vendors failing which action will be taken, warned Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh. The public are advised to follow social distancing measures.

Mumbai, Mar 26 : A 28-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his younger brother for stepping out of their home during the COVID-19 lockdown in the western suburb of Kandivali, police said on Thursday.Rajesh Laxmi Thakur killed his younger brother Durgesh after the latter stepped out of the house despite repeated warnings about the lockdown on Wednesday night, an official from Samta Nagar police station said.

The deceased, who was working in a private firm in Pune, had returned home following the coronavirus scare, he said.When Durgesh got back home after his outing, the accused and his wife shouted at him and a heated argument ensued, following which the accused attacked him with a sharp object, the official said.The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, he said, adding that a case of murder has been registered against the accused.

Hubballi, Apr 16: Police have seized a vehicle carrying nine members of a family from Dharwad for misusing the travel pass issued by the district administration in Narendra Village and sent them for Quarantine.

Deputy SP Ravi Nayak and his team stopped the vehicle at Narendra village, in the outskirts of the city and found out that they were from Uppina Betagiri village returning from a wedding function using government pass issued for medical reasons.

The police seized the vehicle and sent them to KIMS hospital for a medical check-up. Their swab samples have been collected and sent for testing. The police have asked them to go for a compulsory home quarantine for 14 days.
