Mangalore pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi on Martyrs' Day

Mangalore, January 30: The City of Mangalore Monday paid homage to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi with prayer meetings and floral tributes on his 64th death anniversary observed as Martyrs' Day. It was on Jan 30, 1948 that Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated here.

Various organisations and institutions organized separate programmes and prayer meetings to mark the day.

Students chanted devotional songs at the prayer meeting organised in some schools.

Mahatma Gandhi Peace Fondation at Tagore Park organized a special programme to remember the Father of the Nation, where speakers laid emphasis on unity in diversity.

President of Women's Federation Vijayalakshmi B Shetty, Sabeeha Fathima, Sub-Editor, Anupama monthly magazine and Rev Sr Sicilia Mendonca, Head Teacher, Sacred Hearts High School, Kulshekhar spoke on the occasion.

Congress

Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee too observed the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at its city office.

Suresh Ballal spoke about Gandhi and. District Congress minority cell president Moidin Bava proposed vote of thanks. Ashraf compared the programme.

KPCC secretary Ivan D'Souza and local Congress leaders Suresh Ballal, Sadashiva Ullal were present on the occasion.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday inaugurated a mobile Covid-19 testing booth in Bengaluru.

These mobile booths will be used in all wards of Bengaluru to collect samples of those suspected to be infected.

According to information available on the website of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as of Thursday, 4:00 PM, 279 coronavirus cases have been reported from the state, with 80 cured/discharged/migrated and 12 deaths.

India's coronavirus tally is at 12,380 cases, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday.

Udupi, June 21: A graduation student, who had attempted suicide two weeks ago under depression following the postponement of examinations due to covid-19, breathed his last at a private hospital yesterday. 

The deceased has been identified as Shakuntala, a final year degree student of First Grade College, Muniyal. She was a resident of Mathibettu near Vagranga in Hebri taluk. 

According to sources, she had studied hard to clear the examinations. The postponement of examinations led her to depression.  

She consumed poison at her house on June 8. She was immediately rushed to Manipal hospital where she breathed her last on June 20. A case has been registered in Hebri Police Station.

Bengaluru, Jun 12: All the four candidates, including former prime minister H D Deve Gowda (JDS), and senior Congress leader Mallikarjna Kharge, on Friday were declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

Karnataka Assembly Secretary sources here said that all the four candidates, who were in the fray for as many berths, were elected after the last date of withdrawal of candidature ended on Friday.
