CM promises Rs 1,000 cr for welfare of backward classes, urges to remove their 'backward' tag

Mangalore, February 12: In a rare gesture Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Sunday promised the people of backward classes that his government would allocate Rs 1,000 crore exclusively for their welfare in the 2012-13 budget.

Participating in the Billavas convention as part of the centenary year celebration of the All India Billavas' Union at Town Hall in the city, the CM said that Billavas need not feel inferior as many people from the community had now excelled in different sectors, including medicine and engineering.

Reiterating his government's commitment for the overall development of the backward communities, Mr Gowda said that one should not aspire to be identified as 'backward'. People should come to the mainstream of society to ensure that the tag “backward class” was removed, he said.

The Chief Minister said that the Billavas' Union should make efforts to bring Billavas in rural areas, who were dependent on toddy tapping, to the mainstream of society.

Mr. Gowda said that a “medicinal garden” would be developed at the Koti-Chennaya Theme Park which was opened near Karkala recently. He said the Government would promote Enmur, near Panja in Sullia taluk, which is believed to be the birth place of Koti and Chennaya, heroes of the Billava community, as a tourist destination. He, however, did not elaborate on the plan.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister unveiled a plaque to mark the launch of work on a hostel near Kunjathbail for Billava community people.

He said that of Rs. 2 crore announced by the Government for the hostel, Rs. 1 crore would be released. If the project required more than Rs. 2 crore, the Government was committed to sanctioning it, the Chief Minister said.

Presiding over the programme President of the Union Naveenchandra D Suvarna, mentioned the problems faced by the community over the years and how it moved in the path of progress.

On the occasion former minister R L Jalappa released a special edition of 'Brahmashree Guruvani'. Deputy speaker of Legislative Assembly N Yogish Bhat, AICC secretary Vinay Kumar Sorake, Sagar MLA Belur Gopalkrishna and MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, among the present at the dais.

Bengaluru, June 21: An assistant sub-inspector of police who was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 infection in city-based Victoria hospital passed away on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday as he did not respond to the treatment for coronavirus.

The 59-year-old ASI was attached to the Wilson Garden traffic police station in Bengaluru. He tested positive for coronavirus on June 18 and was rushed to the COVID ward in Victoria hospital on June 19. He had fever for the last four days. His wife and two children have been quarantined. According to the police, the station has not yet been sealed down and no policemen have been quarantined.

The Wilson Garden ASI is the third Bengaluru police personnel to die of COVID-19 in the last one week. Earlier, an ASI from the VV Puram traffic police station had died undergoing treatment. On Saturday morning, a head constable from the Kalasipalya police station who was admitted at Victoria hospital passed away. The series of deaths in the police department has created fear among other policemen across the city.

One the other hand, dozens of policemen were tested positive in different parts of Karnataka today including 21 from two police stations of Bengaluru. 

Around 15 policemen from the Kalasipalya police station and five policemen from the Ashok Nagar traffic police station tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday.

In Kalasipalya, three ASIs, head constables and police constables have tested positive. In Ashok Nagar traffic police station, a probationary sub-inspector, an ASI, two police constables and a lady constable tested positive for the virus.

One more police constable working in Bandepalya police station also tested positive. Seven policemen who were in his primary contacts have been quarantined. BBMP officials have begun the process of fumigating the station premises and its surroundings.

Shivamogga, Mar 8: In a tragic incident, three people died on the spot and one person severely injured after a car, in which they were travelling dashed against a wayside tree in Kaspadi village in Sagar Taluk on Sunday.

Police said that the deceased have been identified as Siddappa (40), Venkatesha (50), G Tippanna (60), while injured Nagaraj, was admitted to Hospital at Sagar.

The mishap took place when the victims were their way to visit Kargal Village from Raichur.
