WGSHA students present mouthwatering Thai cuisines

Manipal, February 12: Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration, (WGSHA) Manipal students conducted a two-day food festival called “Thai Chimney” on February 9 and 10, at Fortune Inn Valley View.

The students created the theme and they were solely responsible for putting up the culinary extravaganza. The concept, the operational set-up, the menu, the service design, the layout, the decor and the marketing of the event are all taken care of by a set of students. It was a hands-on experience for them. From laying the tables to taking orders and serving, it was their show.

Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna, an alumnus of WGSHA, who during his recent visit for the college Annual Day on February 3, gave a few tips on how to go about doing things differently in the kitchen.

Another set of students was busy in the kitchen, cooking and plating. And there was yet another set busy serving the guests - students and their parents from other institutions of the University. Some of the dishes served were: Thai Veg Spring Rolls and Chicken Satay, leaf-wrapped sear fish, Vegetarian and non-vegetarian Dimsums, Assorted Seafood, stir-fried in Red Curry, Massaman curry with vegetables, Fiery and Tangy vegetables in Sweet Garlic Sauce, Chicken in Thai Green Sauce, served with Veg fried rice and noodles.

The bakery served Creamy Cendol, Multilayered butter cake and cookies with crispy fruit fritters, vanilla ice cream and honey, whilst the bar came up with refreshing mocktails like Mai Tai, Mango Coladine, crazy cranberry and fizzy watermelon.

During the course of the festival the work of each and every participating student was closely observed by the college faculty members who evaluated them on food presentation and service. “We also take into consideration the feedback from the guests,” said the head of the Food Production Department, Chef K. Thiru.

“Participation in such events is essential for all students of Hotel Management as they get an opportunity to come across real life situations, learn entrepreneurial skills and get a first-hand feel of the operation in which they are very enthusiastically involved,” said Mr. Kulmohan Singh, the Vice Principal of the College.

Bengaluru, Mar 21: All bars and pubs in Karnataka will remain closed from Saturday till March 31 as a preventive measure to tackle coronavirus spread, said state Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.

As per the government advisory, restaurants including cafes cannot serve food in-house and only takeaways will be allowed.

"All bars/pubs to remain closed from tomorrow till March 31 in Karnataka. In all city municipal corporations across the state, restaurants including cafes cannot serve food in-house, only takeaways will be allowed," said Yeddyurappa in a statement.

15 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the state till now, said Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Friday.

The Minister told news agency that two COVID-19 patients, who are recovering, will soon be discharged from the hospital.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in India has now climbed up to 223, including 32 foreigners, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday. As many as 23 people have been cured of the infection in India.

The disease has claimed over 10,000 lives globally.

Mysuru, Mar 7: Karnataka Minister for Medical Education K Sudhakar on Saturday said that State Government may consider suspending the touch-based Biometric time and Attendance system for its employees in view of the COVID-19 threat.

Speaking to media persons while inspecting the medical infrastructure at KR Hospital here on Saturday, he said that many IT companies have already suspended the Biometric Attendance system in a bid to prevent the spread of the virus. Given the threat perception, the government was also contemplating the same and would consider it. However, he did not specify the date.

With regard to the preparedness to handle the threat, the Minister said the government was extremely cautious since last 20 days and had taken all precautionary measures. “All international passengers at the airport are being screened and so far nearly 1 lakh passengers have been screened and anyone with symptoms will be quarantined for 28 days.’’

Bengaluru, Jun 2: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday interacted with District Collectors (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) regarding COVID- 19 situation in the State.

In the meeting held through a video conference, he said that DCs, SPs and the District Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) be divided into taluks and ordered them to take appropriate measures to control COVID-19.

He was speaking today in a video conversation with District Collector, District Panchayat Chief Executives and Superintendents of Police in Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, Udupi, Yadagiri, Raichuru and Belagavi districts regarding measures to control the spread of COVID-19.

The Chief Minister instructed officials to monitor the investments in taluka centres. He also ordered to create a task force in the village panchayats, who will be monitoring things closely.

The Chief Minister also directed for the creation of ward-level watchdog committee in every village and city and an FIR should be registered in case of a home quarantine violation.

Home Minister Basavaraja Bommai, Revenue Minister R Ashok, Chief Secretary TM Vijayabhaskar, Development Commissioner Vandita Sharma, Police Chief Director Praveen Sood, Health Department general secretary Javed Akhtar and secretary Pankaj Kumar Pandey were also present in the meeting.
