Mangalore crash report blames captain

New Delhi, February 17: The Air India Express crash in Mangalore in May 2010 was caused due to the captain's failure to “discontinue the un-stabilised approach'' and continuing with the landing despite three calls from the First Officer to “go around.”

This has been brought out by the Court of Inquiry report that has now been made public. The report adds that “in spite of availability of adequate rest period prior to the flight,” the Captain was in prolonged sleep during the flight which could have led to sleep inertia.

The crash resulted in the death of 158 passengers. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft was commanded by Capt Z. Glucia, a Serbian pilot with 10,200 hours of flying experience. Capt H. S. Ahluwalia, who was the co-pilot, was based in Mangalore and had 3,650 hours of flying experience.

The report adds that probably in view of the ambiguity in various instructions empowering the co-pilot to initiate a 'go-around', the First Officer gave repeated calls to this effect but did not take over the controls to actually discontinue the ill-fated approach.

Since the crash, many changes have come in the domestic civil aviation sector. In the last few days, new rules have come into force that lay down stringent rest periods for pilots operating flights of varying durations.

In addition, the Airports Authority of India has carried out the changes at Mangalore airport, as recommended by the report.

A senior AAI official confirmed the development and said a status report on the improvements had been sent to the Government about six weeks ago.

Bengaluru, Jan 8: The Karnataka high court on Tuesday directed the government to submit steps taken in respect of the order of Lokyukta in relation to the Kethaganahalli landgrab case involving former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, his relatives and former minister DC Thammanna.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka gave the direction on a PIL filed by Samaj Parivartan Samudaya (SPS), an NGO. The petitioner said despite an order from the Lokayukta on August 5, 2014, to take action within 15 days, no action has been initiated till date in respect of encroachment of a huge tract of land in Kethaganahalli along Bengaluru-Mysuru highway.

SPS says the land was purchased in 1979 contrary to norms of Karnataka Land Revenue Act. It claims Kumaraswamy and others paid only Rs 5,000 per acre, although the prevailing market rate was Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per acre.

Mangaluru, Jan 31: Karnataka Chief Secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar on Friday announced to sanction 160 acres of land at Kenjar in the Taluk for setting up the Indian Coast Guard Academy.

The land was allotted from the land bank of Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).

Mr Bhaskar made the announcement at the commissioning of the high-speed interceptor boat C-448 of the Indian Coast Guard at New Mangalore recently.

Bengaluru, Jan 22: The suspected man in planting of a live bomb at the Mangaluru International Airport surrendered before the DG and IG of Karnataka Police, Neelamani Raju, here on Wednesday, police sources said.

The accused was identified as Aditya Rao, a resident of Udupi.

The accused was taken for questioning by the Halasurugate Police, where he was being interrogated intensively, the sources further said.

According to them, he confessed that he planted an explosive device at Mangaluru Airport on Monday said that it was an act of revenge for denying him an employment by the Kempegowda International Airport Limited (KIAL).

He was arrested by the Bengaluru police in the past for making a hoax call to the police stating that a bomb had been planted at the Bengaluru Airport.

Karnataka Home minister Basavaraj Bommai told the media that 'the Bengaluru police have taken the custody of Aditya Rao, who is being subjected for a thorough interrogation'.

The Mangaluru police was also likely to join the Bengaluru police into the investigation, the sources added.

This would have been a false flag operation, if he was not caught, they would have been an explosions and Dr.police would have put muslim youths behind bars...or that was the intention/plan but due to unforseen reasons failed......i hope someone comes out with the truth..

Bomb has weaken once bomber name appears. Now time for fact finding, family emotions, personal attachments etc. If he was Muslim it would have connected to ISIS, Anti-CAA, Pakistan, Kerala..
